The Washington Post has revealed that President Trump attempted to extricate US troops from Syria by asking ally Saudi Arabia to foot the bill for postwar reconstruction and “stabilization” projects in the area of northeast Syria currently occupied by US coalition forces, to the tune of $4 billion. The deal would involve US allies like Saudi Arabia moving into a lead position regarding coalition policy in Syria, while hastening a US exit.
quote:
Though the coalition continues to claim that its occupation of Syrian soil is toward anti-terror and humanitarian efforts, including the reestablishment of civilian infrastructure in a region previously controlled by ISIS, America’s top general, CENTCOM chief Gen. Joseph Votel, admitted in congressional testimony this week that the Syrian government along with its Russian and Iranian allies have effectively won the war.
quote:
The White House wants money from the kingdom and other nations to help rebuild and stabilize the parts of Syria that the U.S. military and its local allies have liberated from the Islamic State. The postwar goal is to prevent Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian partnersfrom claiming the areas, or the Islamic State from regrouping, while U.S. forces finish mopping up the militants.
The Saudis, whose crown prince arrives in Washington on Monday for extensive meetings with the administration, are part of the anti-Islamic State coalition but have largely withdrawn from the fight in Syria in recent years. They are questioning the eye-popping sum even as U.S. officials at one point were drawing up line items totaling $4 billion.

Good. Maybe they shouldn't have let him touch the magic orb.

Why would the Saudis want to fund reconstruction in Syria? Tell Syria's allies Russia and Iran to help them rebuild.

When hogtard want crew read your link but haven't received marching orders yet.
Posted on 3/19/18 at 12:56 pm to Tiger Prawn
That's exactly why we want the Saudis to rebuild and not the Iranians.

This has the potential to blow up bigly

Because they won't be spreading the cash around. Or would you rather Russian cash vs Saudi cash?

For the first time ever, we finally have a president that at least asks other countries to pick up the bill.

BECAUSE Iran is involved that's why

As long as its not US cash, I don't care. Just doesn't really make sense to me as to why the Saudis would want to help fund Assad's rebuilding efforts considering they don't share a border with Syria and they supported the rebels.

Iran is Syria's biggest ally and they supported Assad in the war, while the Saudis were giving support to the rebels.
What do the Saudis get out of funding Syrian rebuilding? Do they think they can gain some influence with Assad and weaken Iran's influence, despite being on the rebels' side during the war?

Iran will say frick you and Putin will do the laugh in that gif.
We need to say we won’t pick up the bill, like Trump is doing. Syria is in their backyard, Saudis will have to invest so there won’t be a power vacuum/hole in the neighborhood.
Don’t feel bad for them. It’s their neighborhood and they can afford it.

If the Saudis can rebuild Syria then they own it not Iran......at worst the Saudis can own part of Syria & frick with Iran at the same time.

I'm not sure what about the $4 billion led you to believe that Russia and Iran wouldn't be helping....
As for why Saudis would want to help out, it is probably because they publicly admitted in 2016 to being involved in the proxy war game and wanted to end it and amend for it. It would greatly help the region which would greatly benefit Saudi Arabia, too.

Or it could be a gesture of good will to build upon moving forward.

They should probably worry more about Yemen than Syria.

Here's more Saudi Arabia! Maybe we can use our military to take over the whole Middle East and then give it all to him
