Trump created an adversarial situation that he can use to feed his confirmation bias strategy of persuasion while keeping his base fully outraged and ultimately engaged. They also help by inciting idiocy from the left.

They still did that and managed last place. The bump is a direct result of Trump unleashing upon them and everyone tuning in to see the train crash and burn.
The right is going to stick with FNC and the left will stay with MSNBC. CNN had one charm left and that was being factual and boring. It was the channel you went to in a crisis for straight news. That has been stripped away now and are basically seen as MSNBC. The tech embracing left cannot support 2 traditional news sources.
