quote:I had to prune down my hibiscus to about 6 inches, I was unaware that they die in winter and come back late spring summer. When they bloom they are the most gorgeous flower next to the gardenia and Japanese tulip.

Fwiw he also mentioned that the "dossier" is not what we probably envision, i.e. a single, all-inclusive document. Rather, what is referred to as "The Dossier" is a series of separate offerings by Steele. So each of those was probably used separately and individually. Not the same document over and over.

quote:That's good to know. We have hibiscus in pots on the terrace in Charlotte , but just planted a couple at the beach. I was wondering if they'd come back. Sounds like they will.

Absolutely gorgeous. There are a few types of hibiscus. One is called 'hardy" they come back. I think I got the tropical that takes a while to come back after pruning?

If they don't do well, I'll know to look for "Hardy" next time.

I bought mine at Lowe's as well. I presumed they wouldn't sell the kind that could only grow nicely in Hawaii. I even called Lowe's garden center and asked because the plant tags weren't checked for "hardy" she said, oh well we do sell tropical plants. Mine looked dead they were dug up to trash and the growth was shown.
They survived freaking Florence but the cold snap this winter got them. They were replanted quickly and are doing well.

BTW: the beaches on Carolina coast took a beating. Carolina Bch Kure-erosion and nasty black chips of sand. Topsail island is still gorgeous.

I feel like two separate threads have accidentally merged.

I'm hoping a good carrot cake recipe will be posted.

One $15Million Beach Restoration Project later, and we're good as new.
They pumped a couple million yards of sand ashore from about 1 1/2 miles out. Interesting process.

I saw them dredging before offshore doing this, it is so interesting. It seems like they dredged some black chips that look like wood chips and hurt the skin as the waves crash on pleasure island. Topsail good to go.

Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 large eggs
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups grated carrot
1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
1 (3 1/2-ounce) can flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
Buttermilk Glaze
Cream Cheese Frosting
Directions
Step 1
Line 3 (9-inch) round cakepans with wax paper; lightly grease and flour wax paper. Set pans aside.
Step 2
Stir together first 4 ingredients.
Step 3
Beat eggs and next 4 ingredients at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Add flour mixture, beating at low speed until blended. Fold in carrot and next 3 ingredients. Pour batter into prepared cakepans.
Step 4
Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Drizzle Buttermilk Glaze evenly over layers; cool in pans on wire racks 15 minutes. Remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks. Spread Cream Cheese Frosting between layers and on top and sides of cake.
Chef's Notes
This cake recipe is a crowd favorite, no matter what season it is. Add some extra spice, rum, or brown butter during the cold months. During the spring, decorate it with flowers or maybe even hints of fruit.

I wish they would release all of the "dossier" however it is organized and specifically how it was used.
