It makes me .

NBC’s broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony drew 16.7 million viewers, the smallest US television audience for the event in 33 years, according to preliminary data.

Friday’s audience reflects a steep drop, despite difficult comparisons with previous opening ceremonies, when viewers had fewer streaming options.

The Tokyo opener’s TV audience declined by 37% from 2016, when 26.5 million people watched the Rio de Janeiro Games opener, and 59% from 2012, when 40.7 million people watched the London ceremony.

It was the lowest audience for the opening ceremony since the 1988 Seoul Games, which attracted 22.7 million TV viewers. It was also lower than the 1992 Barcelona Games, when 21.6 million people tuned in, according to Nielsen data.

Not sure how this can be discounted when tv viewers are being shed in high numbers every year and more streamers are being picked up.

I bet the numbers overall were still quite down but I do really want to know how well/poorly it streamed. Otherwise we’re just celebrating this for nothing.

how much advertising revenue is generated from the live streaming?

SOME of the streaming viewers are wanting to see a particular event without supporting the corporate monster

say what you want, but those numbers absolutely hurt the folks at NBC

Doesn’t NBC run all the American streams? I assumed they have the same commercials as on tv.

I really don’t know the logistics of viewing the Olympics

Anecdotally it has to be pretty damn low. I haven't heard a single person mention the Olympics in any capacity and prior to seeing post about the opening ceremonies i didn't even know it was happening.

Does this sentence make sense to anyone? 16.7 is less than both 22.7 and 21.6.

I don’t really know, but I do know a little bit about advertising and marketing

So, let’s assume that you are correct and NBC owns the rights to any and all streaming (which may well be the case)

Even if this is true, I would think that the ad revenue for that comes mostly from retargeting/remarketing - getting paid for online clicks

There is money in that (the TD owners can attest to that), but it is substantially less than conventional sources bring in

what I don’t know is whether the sponsors paid a set fee going on or if they get charged based on ratings after the event

either way, there are some folks that are disappointed - Big League

You don't have to watch that stuff live now. I watched it on delay last night, and it was the best tv I've seen in a couple years or more.

It is a very poorly worded sentence.

The '92 games were the lowest previous audience, not '88, so why go back to '88? Why even mention it?

A 23 percent drop is pretty significant. I promise you NBC sold ads based on at least 20 million tuning in.

Maybe they can promote some more LGBTQRSTUV or anti-American bullshite as the games go forward. Yeah. That'll make people want to watch.

Olympics are like the NBA to me. Just don't care. I don't know who was even in the NBA playoffs this year, can't name and put a face on but maybe 3 NBA players. I can name 3 only because of tv commercials and only then when they name them in the commercials. And I know less of the BLM Olympics.

This is only the 3rd Summer Games since 1976 that I will not watch any event at all (1980 was all officially boycotted, 1988 I was in Basic Training).

(ETA: And the USOC will inexplicably blame COVID rather than *ahem* "more obvious" reasons.)
