Together Louisiana is at it again with some pure propaganda

With communists, expect communism
look at how they describe tax exemptions now
this is how they created that lie
they presume that if we get this tax money, that magically the tax burden for everyone here will be halved, because that's what governments do with new sources of taxation, right? they cut existing taxes and maintain spending levels?
the notice issue is one thing, but using an outright lie and propaganda to rile people up is what you expect from these people. it completely destroys any argument they want to make about valid issues. i guess the reception to that video wasn't strong enough so their next option was outright dishonesty
look at how they describe tax exemptions now
quote:
A tax exemption approved last month by the Calcasieu School Board, Police Jury & Sheriff for Driftwood LNG means that, in 2020, Calcasieu taxpayers will be paying more than double in property taxes what they would otherwise be paying. Another exemption they are considering for Juniper LLC would take an additional $140 million in industrial property off the tax rolls.
this is how they created that lie
quote:
In November 2018, with almost no public notice or discussion, the Calcasieu Parish School Board, Police Jury & Sheriff voted to allow Driftwood LNG to keep 100% of its $15.9 billion in property off the tax rolls for the next 10 years. If that property were allowed to go onto the rolls in the normal fashion, property tax rates for Calcasieu parish residents and businesses would drop from 108.2 mills to 51.2 mills, still producing the same amount of revenue ($232M per year).

That’s a decent criticism, but do you think we should reign in the ITEP program?
I think we’re about to see the Chemical Association and LABI rain hell down upon the Louisiana Legislature. Wouldn’t surprise me if they went around the EO and codified the exemptions can only be granted by the state board.

We’d be rich with more tax money!

in an honest response, from a purely ideological perspective i hate them. however, we're competing with other states/areas offering similar tax treatment. they have more to offer, also, so we have to offer more. without these expansions and industrial, we're frickED.
this is the only hope we have to not become legit 3rd world

Honestly that probably should happen regardless. Too much power in the hands of the governor. However, that would require a constitutional amendment.

right
About the only thing this state has left to offer business is special treatment in the form of exemptions and what not

We just had two applications denied by the City Council.
I understand we do not have an educated population nor great infrastructure, but we still have great waterways at the mouth of the main river dividing the country. I think we sometimes just bend over to these plants and take it because they threaten to go somewhere else. I wouldn't mind to call their bluff once or twice and let them go put a refinery in Missouri or Illinois to see if they'll really do it. I just think it's out of whack when you have upwards of 90% of a property's value off the rolls in some of these projects.

Then we shouldn't bitch about our terrible infrastructure and education system.
If it's a binary choice between having plants come here to give jobs to pacify the baws and not pay any taxes or have the plants leave and all chaos break out because the baws won't have jobs, then of course we're stuck in the status quo.

Goodness, I hope so, but those lobbying outfits have had a lot of attrition over the past few years. I don't know if they've got the horses left in the stable to bend ears and twist arms like they used to.

If the baws have jobs, even if the plant isn't paying as much in property taxes, the state is making money off of the baws in sales taxes and income taxes. It's not a zero sum game.

Our infrastructure is decades behind, it’s almost a lost cause at this point
As for education - there are so many more factors there than just spending. I grew up with plenty of kids who didn’t think about college because their parents had decent blue collar jobs as their parents did before them. Not valuing education has been a thing here for more than a century

Just since the tweaking of the credits under JBE, $20 BILLION worth of new projects and expansions went elsewhere, mostly to the Houston area. These were projects that otherwise would have been built here, but instead went somewhere else. We played this game in the 80's and 90's and lost big time.
10% of $20 billion is a hell of a lot more than 100% of zero.

This is where we see the fundamental differences in how money is viewed between differing political ideologies. Progressive groups like TL fundamentally believe that all money belongs to the government and that allowing someone/some entity to keep more is theft. I will guarantee you that if these industries played those taxes, there would be exactly a 0% reduction in property taxes as a result. They always justify taking more money no matter what. They consider it a holy obligation.

I need a link for that.
