Three black teens bombarded with racism due to success in NASA competition

The real story should read: a handful of anonymous jackasses on 4Chan post mean things about some black girls.
Why does it have to be made to seem that they are being met with racism at every turn in their life?

When did 4chan being 4chan become news?

It’s how the outrage system works these days.
Four random Twitter accounts (which could all be the same person running them for all anyone knows) posts mean things about X group
Other users see it and Retweet those tweets
Buzfeed/Slate/Mother Jones/Vox etc. all write story with headline claiming “internet users” using the 3 or 4 tweets as example.
Those stories get shared a million times and the whole issue is blown out of proportion
Example: “Conservative users outraged by [blank issue]” and then the story will be screenshots of a couple tweets but the story is used to mock/make conservatives look bad

The real story: Asian teens snubbed for being too smart in NASA competition.
Posted on 5/4/18 at 6:57 am to Roaad
The contest was based on internet polling of whose project was best, the girls took the lead in the contest due to people on reddit saying “vote for the only black girls in the contest”. Who knows which project (theirs or someone else’s) was most deserving.

Real headline:
Scientific Achievement now determined by popular vote on FB and Toutube.

Why not? "Climate change" was "decided" by "consensus".

This mentality is part of the problem. It’s a tad unfair that people will automatically not take them seriously because they are a team of black girls. Without looking it up, I assume that their high school skews towards math, science, and engineering (since it’s named for Benjamin Banneker).
I agree this should be a non-story; internet trolls should be ignored. However, if the project if meritorious (and it sounds like it is), then they should be applauded.

Okay, I missed this part.

All the accumulated evidence yields a very high likelihood that my statement is correct. So the mentality is not a problem. The problem is shunning merit and honest evaluation.
Identity politics has backfired.
To be honest, I don't understand the restraint of Asians. They are fricked over when it comes to merit, more than any other group in the nation.

I responded to you before I saw how the contest was evaluated. I originally assumed it was judged in-house by NASA scientists or something.
I now agree with you.

The lesson to be learned here is that there are a lot of assholes in the world. If you let that eat at you, eventually you'll be one of them.

From their twitter:
"Public voting starts today and we need YOUR vote! We are the only team from the east coast & female minority group!"
Hmm...why not just say "We need your vote"? Why do they feel the need to include the words female and minority?

That doesn't sell or get enough clicks

Their project did have merit. We do need a nonflammable weave for space travel
The Asians probably made up some bs about robots or solar energy or something

It's almost as if they're admitting they're not good enough to be there, so they try to solicit the sympathy/white guilt vote.
