McMaster was once a legend and a bit of a contrarian, which had made him successful as a commander but disliked by the top brass. Army peeps were very angry when he was a COL and passed over twice for BG (normally that means you get discharged due to 'up or out'). He got selective continuation and pressure on the GO's won out, and they promoted him to BG. But since getting his star(s).... it seems during those first years as a general officer, he was co-opted to the dark side.
