The swastika was a very common symbol before the Nazi's took it. For instance:

Nazis chose the swastika because it is an old European folk symbol that dates back thousands of years. The "Aryan" people used it as part of their religious ceremonies. There's an ancient wood building in Russia made in the shape of a swastika.

It made its way to India from Europe and is prominent there in Hinduism.
