The Tyranny of Big Tech - New book coming out tomorrow by Josh Hawley (R Senator in MO)

Amassing unimaginable amounts of personal data, giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple—once symbols of American ingenuity and freedom—have become a techno-oligarchy with overwhelming economic and political power.
Decades of unchecked data collection have given Big Tech more targeted control over Americans’ daily lives than any company or government in the world. In The Tyranny of Big Tech, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri argues that these mega-corporations—controlled by the robber barons of the modern era—are the gravest threat to American liberty in decades.
To reverse course, Hawley argues, we must correct progressives’ mistakes of the past. That means recovering the link between liberty and democratic participation, building an economy that makes the working class strong, independent, and beholden to no one, and curbing the influence of corporate and political elites.
Big Tech and its allies do not deal gently with those who cross them, and Senator Hawley proudly bears his own battle scars. But hubris is dangerous. The time is ripe to overcome the tyranny of Big Tech by reshaping the business and legal landscape of the digital world.
I think we all have a pretty good idea about how dangerous big tech is but I'm going to see if I can find this tomorrow at the book store. I'd imagine there is a lot more depth than what most of us know here.
I ran into a write up on Wired that isn't all that positive but I'm still interested in what he has to say
quote:
Where Hawley’s book departs from the standard anti-tech treatise is in his attempt to tie the current moment into a grand theory of American political history. In Hawley’s telling, people like Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos are the direct ideological descendants of the original Gilded Age robber barons. Their dominance is the culmination of what he calls “corporate liberalism,” a philosophy in which, he writes, the state and big business conspire to deny the common man his independence and self-government. According to Hawley, corporate liberalism became entrenched a century ago in both major political parties, and today, “Big Tech and Big Government seek to extend their influence over every area of American life.”

That review by Wired is encouraging to me because they didn’t approve of it.

It’s probably a great book, but how do senators have time to write a book while in office? I barely have time to make dinner after my 9 to 5

I don't read enough of wired to really have an opinion
But I'd guess most tech journals lean solidly left
Even they understand that the tech influence is problematic though

I read that as Tranny.
I blame it on this clown world we're living in.

So it sounds like Josh Hawley’s telling is dead fricking on.

I’m going to purchase it because it focuses on what I believe to be a pivotal issue at a critical moment and because there was a strong, concerted effort to cancel this book.
I feel this publisher, Regnery, which is a small independent publisher, should be rewarded after Simon & Schuster caved to the mob and power players by cancelling publication.
As for whether this book is a convincing analysis of the subject matter, I will judge it for myself. This book deserves a chance though, I believe, so I will happily purchase it.

Someone writes it for them.
Like Andrew Cuomo’s book, where he had his taxpayer-paid staff write it for him.

Well, he has directly dealt with big tech on a major level in his job and his role as a senator is to target these issues on a federal level.

If the founders/heads of these companies had different political views, Hawley would have no problem with them. That’s it.

If they had different political views, you’d have a problem with them. Checkmate, queer. Back to your other boards.

It’s funny that the “pro-business” party wants to interfere with corporations because they don’t espouse the same views as they do.

That’s a very simplistic retelling of a story from the short bus.

Eh that's not it. The data harvesting should be worrisome to anyone that isn't a moron.

Media is going to try and tells us that Media and business don't simply want to create useless automatons that do nothing but consume. Logically, that is the ideal for both.
They seek to deny independence because people cannot be controlled that way. They aren't useful to the demands of business if they have their own thoughts and motivations.

I saw him on Mark Levine's show last night. Seems like a solid, thoughtful guy.

I plan on buying this as well. It’ll be a good read and the money goes towards a Senator who’s fighting against the 1984 culture the democrats want to establish.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not meaning to single him out. I’m going to buy the book on principle. It’s just interesting how they are all starting to write books while in office.
Did this happen 30 years ago?

Yes. And they used ghost writers then. It was also a way to launder cash to the congressperson.
Jim Wright ended that gravy train with his flagrant abuse of the ethics of it all.
