All of these frickers at the grocery store always check out 2x.
They have plenty of money for the beer, cigarettes, liquor and other things not provided by welfare.
But the boiled crab legs, steaks, prepared cupcakes, cookies, chips, dips, snacks, and all manner of unhealthy shite, gets charged straight to the LA purchase card.
#1 question: If these folks have all of this extra money for these "luxury" items, WTF are they on welfare for?

No. Catfish, ground beef, cheaper roasts, pork and chicken. They can use their own money for more expensive stuff.
It will be hard to get businesses to monitor it at the register.

I think it should be more like WIC where it only covers certain things, and half of them would be produce, and fresh or frozen chicken, fish, and shrimp. Other things to include potatoes, pasta, and rice. Also milk, almost forgot about milk. Nobody should need anything else, honestly and if your diet needs anything else, you can pay for it with your own money.

I'm a fan of severely limiting snap and bringing back government commodities.

You do realize that this is what Mahmdani has in mind for NYC?
He’s proposed state run grocery stores.
Democrats have already started outlawing soda and other sugary drinks in the northeast cities.
Liberals are pushing lab grown fake meats
What NYC will end up with is state owned and controlled food supplies but only of certain foods that they (the democrats in government) find acceptable. Forget red meat altogether, only free range organically fed chicken, free range eggs, no pork due to Muslims, Jews, and animal rights activists. Only organic produce. All provided by their cronies on sealed contracts.
They will either have to raise taxes to cover the “organic” label or they will not be free to customers as promised, rather even more expensive due to the organic label and also just due to the lack of competition allowing the Democrat government another mechanism towards “economic equity”.
Here again the problem is not fixed by MORE government involvement but rather by less. Cut off the SNAP program completely and get federal government out of the food industry except for the safety aspect. Let the individual states decide how to handle food distribution to the needy. Once again we don’t need the Feds to take at the point of a gun from people in one place to give to people in another.

I feel like I should be able to force a family on SNAP to meal plan exactly how I want them to:
- apples
- eggs
- ground turkey
- bananas
- tap water (sorry you don't get to have filtered)
- rice
- frozen assorted veggie packs
Sorry that's all you get

But let’s be honest it’s just as much about Big grocery corporate welfare as it is the welfare Queens
Indeed. I remember being told that was the plan for welfare from the beginning. The government planners know damn well that none of this money will stay in their pockets for long. It's a direct way to buy votes and keep the money circulating.
I just wish we could put an end to that.
All food assistance should come in a box, bag, or can. (Dried beans, rice, powdered milk, flour, canned meat, etc.)
We've been far too generous.

Do you think it should even more strict on Junk food?
It should be more strict on all food... no more using SNAP at convenience stores... no more using SNAP for prepared meals...

This. We also need to take a hard look at how much they get. You cannot stop the secondary market they create but they do not need grocery budgets fhat are double or even triple whst everyone else has

I'm actually in favor of cutting off SNAP all together, but I know that will never happen.
I'm not in favor of some Democratic version of whole foods. Maybe at best the equivalent of the commissary that the gov't owns and runs on military bases. More like a gov't run food bank they have off brand labels of beans, grains, rice, vegetables, government cheese and non premium cuts of meat.
I'm not talking about Gov't taking over or controlling grocery stores which is what you described.

SNAP shouldn't be used for soda and junk food.

SNAP benefits should not allow for pick and choose shopping. The card should only say how many people are covered by the benefit, and no dollar value. People with this benefit should only be allowed to pick up a preloaded grocery cart at a specified time/place once a week. This cart has milk, eggs, rice, beans, chicken, veggies, and fruits in enough quantity to meet the dietary needs of the number in your family qualified for the benefit. Nothing more….ever.

Most SNAP recipients also are on Medicaid. By requiring them to purchase healthier foods, it may help keep their healthcare costs down

This is gonna be gradual. Keep in mind that only about a dozen states have ANY restrictions on Snap. There will be more and then you'll start seeing red states add items. The reason for the slow move is the fear of Dem ads in the next election: "They want to starve poor people!!!"
That’s not going to stop them saying democracy is dead, republicans banned soda.

Saw reports a while back of store owners giving the snap folks about half what their cards are worth in cash so they can buy what they want. Then the store owners use the cards for other items.

I think soda is a good start.
Banning real food, like shrimp or steak is a bad idea. They only get x amount of dollars- who cares if it's spent on proteins?
The American Tax Payers footing the bill should care. Why should a freeloader get to spend $20/lb on steaks or buy a sack of crawfish for $250 or other high end proteins when there's much better value out there to go farther? A 10lb bag of chicken quarters can regularly be found for less than $10, the other day I bought a pork loin for $1.15/lb, cut it into thick cut chops, and frozen them, my family will get 6-7 meals out of that alone. So yes, there needs to be a cap on the type and price of proteins they're allowed to buy.
