The Sacramento Bee: More than 1 million undocumented immigrants have received DLs

More than 1 million undocumented immigrants have received driver’s licenses, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday.
Assembly Bill 60, authored by then-Assemblyman Luis Alejo in 2013, required California DMV offices to issue driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants as long as they can prove their identity and residence within the state. The law has led to 1,001,000 undocumented immigrants receiving licenses as of March 31 but doesn’t give the licensees carte blanche to drive outside of California or fly across state or federal borders.
“Immigrants are getting tested, licensed and insured and this is making our roads safer for everyone,” said Alejo, now a Monterey County supervisor, in a prepared statement. “Today, we see the law working the way it was intended to and has dramatically improved the lives of a million immigrants and their families.”
Twelve states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico allow undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. Undocumented immigrants were free to receive driver’s licenses anywhere in the U.S. until 1993, when California became the first state to restrict access and 45 others followed suit.
In 2015, the first year the law took effect, approximately 605,000 undocumented immigrants received licenses. Fewer people applied after an initial spike, and the DMV now issues about 10,000 AB 60 licenses statewide per month.
Yay?????

It would make the roads safer by reducing a million peoples worth of traffic off of the already congested California highways.
Why would any company insure an illegal immigrant ?

Can undocumented immigrantion and legal (documented) immigration logically coexist?
If giving the Feds 20-30% of your income or driving the speed limit were optional what would be the purpose of having these laws in the first place? Let’s just have congress make recommendations and all do whatever we want

Ahhh yes...they would just say they can't drive today because they don't have a license.

If they are paying their premiums on time then why wouldn't they?

It does in America, like right now.

They won't check beyond the DL that is presented to them. Most of them will pay the first month to get the car and then stop paying after that.

Well obviously this and the California motor voter law passed in 2015 are entirely unrelated.

If they are undocumented, how do they prove their identity and residence? Is it all tattooed on their chest or something?
Edited to add: Up here you can tell who the undocumented drivers are. They drive under the speed limit and when they crash; they run like hell.

Illegals do not pay for car insurance.
It still befuddles me how someone that has a legal ID can still be considered undocumented. Hell, you know their names and addresses. How is that undocumented.
Also, if the DMV knows they are illegal, have a name, and an address, why are illegals they scared to put the same thing on a census?

I know it does, but it defeats the entire purpose of the legal immigration process. Just get here however you want and grab a drivers license in California. No need to apply, get approval, and go through the paperwork.
Even inquiries into your immigration status is an issue now apparently. I can’t believe a government has the nerve to want an idea of how many people in their country are citizens of their country... Barbaric

Also, how do you circumvent voter ID laws? Give illegals DLs.

I can't support this.
I've got a lot of friends and acquaintances who were not born in this country. Many of them take advantage of the fact that they have a home to go back to if shite hits the fan. Many of them are ONLY here for THE BENEFITS, and have no love for the US.
I've structured businesses where the foreigner who was indifferent to staying in the US bore the liability for riskier businesses. Some of these people do not care if they have to leave the country in a worse condition than they found it.
I'm not a racist or a bigot; I'm just anti-leech.

Because they pay premiums? It would be great if these border hoppers were insured.

If you are employing illegals, then you are a large part of the problem.
If no one would hire them, then many of them would go home or not come in the first place.
If you know they are illegally in the U. S., then call ICE on them.

You really need me to point out the ignorance of your statement?
