Are they? It gives them a lot of power. Imagine a world where you post something unapproved and then the next day there's an agent knocking on your door. A company does something the political party doesn't like, well they will have 7 or 8 agents on the bench ready to go.

People will get really angry when they start pilfering 401Ks and then savings accounts. IRS will come down hard and violently on anyone who doesn't fall into line - they don't have to answer to due process, they can make shite up and then enforce it. They already do.

I went through holy hell last year on a totally bogus charge by an incompetent agent. I had to hire an enrolled agent and a tax attorney. Eventually the IRS agreed I didn’t own anything, but it still cost me thousands of dollars.
