Total GDP IN 2017 19.2 trillion

FOR CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK COMBINED 22% of total at 4.2 trillion.

GDP FOR THE REST OF THE COUNTRY 78% at 14.9 trillion.

The Primary purpose of the electoral college is to make sure high population areas do not control the federal dollars generated by the less populated areas. Social issues and other political divisions come after that. The flyover states contribute the most to the treasury. Without the Electoral College California and New York could control the entire treasury for the use of their population's goals and objectives without taking into account the desires of the very people that generated 78% of the treasury.

Facts are not infused with feelings though. Feelings are what are important nowadays.

The primary purpose was a hybrid/compromise system between a federally focused direct population election and a state’s focused election chosen by congress.

It does give less populated states more power, but I don’t know why people think it prevents highly populated areas from having more power. While its less than their population disturbution, it just happens that those areas now tend be highly partisan which really diminishes their voting power, for both sides.

If it went to direct election they would have more power, based on their population share, but they wouldn’t have some uniquely disproportionate power that renders the rest of the country powerless.

That the Republicans would have only won the WH once in the past 26 years?

You can’t necessarily say that, because strategies would have been different if popular vote is what mattered?

Republicans would have campaigned more in NY and CA if they were trying to win total votes.

The senate being appointed by and beholden to the state governments was supposed to be the check on the executive branch catering to the will of the people in larger states and swing states. It also is supposed to make people pay more attention to state politics. The 17th amendment is one of the Worst things to happen to the United States.

Yeah, I can. I doubt the GOP ever wins the popular vote again with the changing demographics in this country.

O so over 200+ years with more rapid growth and more rapid change, and changes within the political parties, didn't result in that, but less rapid change will?

That's shortsighted in both a historical and predictive sense.

I sorta think we need a "Saturday Noon Rooftop Throwing", where we round up some queers, take them to the top of the tallest building in the city, and throw them off. You can take bets on who can throw the further-est and who can bounce the highest. All proceeds could go to GLAAD.
