Until now, your income that paid for public schools (via state & local taxes) wasn’t taxed by the federal government. GOP bill ends that. Instead, they’re now creating a tax break for *private* school tuition.

The GOP is, in effect, defunding public schools to fund private schools. This is a straight-up war on public education.

Why do we always have to go to war against “something?”

His logic seems disingenuous at best...

This should raise the level of achievement that public schools are expected to reach for the amount of funding they get.

And BTW, the same people paying megataxes in blue states like California and New York are likely sending their kids to private school students anyway so they are actually recouping some of the credits they lost through the state and local tax change.

Regardless of the melt or not, what is the jist of these comments?

Will school district taxes no longer be deductible from income subject to federal taxation?

The problem with schools isn't funding. I could go into a long soap box about the problems with public schools but I won't. The concept of politicians throwing money at schools and expecting results doesn't work.

Public schools with teacher unions is a horrible combination and has ruined any real value a public education might have brought.

Not all teachers are checked out but a vast majority is.

One of the biggest issues that rarely gets ink is the role of the parent(s). Their participation in their child's education is dismal to non existent.

State and local taxes cannot be itemized anymore.

HOWEVER, the standard deduction will also increase.

This means any non-itemizer won’t be affected and many on the low end of itemizing will be able to switch to the standard deduction.

The main people hit will be the high income filers who have huge itemized deductions, mainly in states like NY CA IL etc with sky high state and local taxes.

Wait, they're now saying that states that can no longer deduct their state tax from their federal tax are going to have shitty schools because they're paying more taxes?

And it still won't be taxed up to $10,000 in local and state taxes.

It's funny how the doubling of the standard deduction always gets ignored in these hack articles.

So for those that itemize, income will be taxed twice. That is known as a tax increase. Nice work Pubs.

But if I donate to a church school, that amount is tax deductible?
