Central, Eastern and Southern European countries are always just a bad economic cycle away from tyranny. No real tradition or culture wrapped up in democracy or self-rule.

If it requires a "strongman" like Orban to stop the insane Islamification of Europe, then we need more "strongmen" in Europe.

Viktor Orban was PM of Hungary from 1998 to 2002, and current PM since 2010. Hungary has traditionally been anti-Socialist, especially since the 1956 Soviet invasion, and, along with Poland, was very pleased to see DJT become POTUS in 2016.
For purpose of reference, COVID-19 appeared in late 2019.
I rarely respond to posts with frank criticism, but you literally could not have picked a worse example for your thesis of COVID-19 causing overthrow of constitutional republics.

Hungary has been experiencing democratic backsliding for around a decade now, when Orban came into power the second time. Now he is using the Coronavirus to claim extralegal emergency powers and the authority to make all decisions.

Yes, what local and state governments are doing here in what is supposed to be a free society is alarming enough. But the President shutting down the whole country and suspending the constitution is scary.

In actuality, our governors want Trump to be more dictatorial. They were all complaining that he hadn’t ordered lockdowns and whatnot. In reality, they want to deflect blame from themselves and on to Trump for their own failings.
