In the past three decades, the number of Americans who are on disability has skyrocketed. The rise has come even as medical advances have allowed many more people to remain on the job, and new laws have banned workplace discrimination against the disabled. Every month, 14 million people now get a disability check from the government.

In the past few decades, an entire disability-industrial complex has emerged. It has just one goal: Push more people onto disability. And, sometimes, it seems like the government is outmatched. This is especially true in the legal system.

"My back hurt." It's a 10."

Medical disability fraud is almost never investigated, so more people are getting on it. Also, it's a check and not food stamps that have to be spent on certain items only. It's a fricking racket.

One of the biggest scams around. So many people in disability and aren't disabled.

There's probably a correlation with the aging U.S. Baby Boomer population.

Also there is a huge spike of women with kids on welfare / medicaid have figured out how to claim their kids are mentally “disabled” to get their “crazy check”.

A lot of this is due to jobs leaving small towns and communities over the last 50 years and moving to cities. People don't want to abandon these places and so they go on disability to enable them to scratch out a living.

Some of the claims are legitimate, of course, but too many of them aren't.

My oldest brother has been scamming disability for over 10 years.

My wife and I turned him in to Social Security and they did nothing about it.

He originally went on disability because he was "too fat to work" and him being so overweight caused a lot of health problems.

Our tax dollars paid for U3 surgery to help with his sleep apnea. They paid for him to have stomach surgery to lose weight. He dropped from 450lbs+ down to 220ish.

He now "owns" a business(technically it is in his father-in-laws name) and he pays himself under the table and still gets his disability check under social security.

A real scumbag!

I'm seeing people "working hard" to get on disability for asbergers and other mental/emotional disorders.

It is doubly hard work because of their side jobs which pay them under the table.

My favorite was the young man on disability for asbergers while finishing his degree and working as a driver for a roadside assistance company.

My conclusion is that he doesn't have remorse or see what he is doing as wrong because of the mental condition.

Being obese comes from addiction to food. You get disability for it. The govt gives you money so you can buy more food in order to become more disabled.
So, why isn't drug addiction a disability?

There in an entire legal industry formed around getting disability. The radio and TV were/are filled with the ads. Ask Google to find a disability lawyer near you and you have dozens to choose from.
