The COVID19 guidelines are nearly useless without mass testing of the population.

There was only one way this pandemic was going to be effectively managed and that was to quickly know who has the virus, who doesn't have the virus and a separation between the two.....it's probably too late. Does social distancing, restrictions on travel, limits on gatherings and strict hygiene help to mitigate the spread? Undoubtedly it has to help but without knowing who's spreading the virus I believe the CDC/government guidelines are not enough to halt the spread to a significant percentage of the country and to the world's population.
As a side story my brother works for a pharmaceutical company, a new employee who he is/was mentoring advised him that his wife is a nurse caring for a COVID19 patient who was undiagnosed for several days. The new employee felt it was only right to inform my brother he may have been exposed to COVID19 via his wife. My brother promptly went and talked to his boss about the situation and the boss sent the new employee to their onsite nurse. After checking his vitals and speaking with the new employee she determined he's showing no symptoms so it was ok to return to work. My brother is 57 and has ulcerative colitis, he had his bowels removed when he was in his early 20's so he's considered minimally immune compromised but compromised nonetheless. Told the boss he wasn't going to work with an employee with known exposure to COVID19 so the boss said take vacation and go home if you're that worried. Brother called his internal medicine doctor told him the situation so his doctor filled out the forms for short term disability and said call the company's headquarters and talk directly to corporate HR.......my brother is now off for 30 days and he is self quarantined until the new employee's wife test results comeback this week.

I, for one, am completely against mandatory and compulsory testing of citizens.
80-85% of the people who are tested are negative.

Sounds like your brother may also have Low-T.
If he's that scared, why wasn't he already self-isolating?

Can't even begin to think about contact tracing without mass testing.

Japan isn't doing massive testing and have a grand total of 72 deaths with a population of 128 million and it's not like those folks aren't packed in like sardines.
France rolled out very comprehensive testing but is in a far worse situation than us
The reason it was successful in SK was their police state tactics used for anyone who tested positive.

I mis-read this as "Mask testing". Which got me thinking of "Fit tests" for respirators. Wish I had a Porta Count machine right now. Might could make some extra coin.

It will take another couple months to get the new testing manufactured to a point it can mass delivered to the populations and reported.
Things like this do not happen overnight. Companies are developing tests. Labs are improving and manufacturers are preparing for mass production when the get something that is reliable and works

Did you miss the part where I said he works for a pharmaceutical company? He's considered essential. He wasn't worried until a person told him that he may have been exposed to COVID19. Why would he be in self isolation before there's a reason to self isolate? Now that there's a reason he's doing just that but not at the advice of his employer but from his doctor. Have you been hitting the greygoose this morning?

Did someone else write the title of YOUR thread for you?
Your point is, guidelines are useless. Is your brother going straight to work and then straight home? No grocery store? Is his boss, the guy he went and cried to, practicing no human contact? How does your brother know his boss hasn't been exposed? See how that works? Probably not. Just take a midol. I'm sure it will quit aching pretty soon.

Would certainly help the government round out the DNA database on all of us

Isn't that what Germany is doing. Testing all 805 million people?

quote:The CDC really screwed us in terms of initial tests. So we missed the initial opportunity. But we'll get another in a few weeks.
.....it's probably too late.
As we begin to re-start the economy locale-by-locale, we should finally have tests in place to actively track new cases and contacts, as we should have when this first started.

No, you're missing the point of the side story which has nothing to do with mass testing. My brother wasn't overly concerned about COVID19 until a person he works with, in close proximity advised my brother his wife was exposed to COVID19. See how that works? He was working until a known higher risk of contracting COVID19 was brought to his attention. See how that works? Now, he on his own efforts, not from the company's concern was given 30 day short term disability because he's considered immune compromised.....See how that works?
Here, let me type your response......OK BOOMER!!

What did Japan do that the US should have done?

Nothing really.
They did regulate travel from China but we did alsi and non tourist can still go there.
Epidemiologists are somewhat mystified as well.
They do have a culture of not shaking hands and wearing masks.

I understand. Your brother is worried, because he is around someone, that is around someone, that was around someone that has the virus. Seven degrees of Kevin Bacon shite.

You either have reading comprehension deficiencies or you like to embellish to support your position. My brothers exposure isn't several times removed from a person verified to have COVID19. The patient with COVID19 was being cared for by a coworker's wife. My brother's coworker hasn't been quarantined from his wife so they had been living together several days before the positive test came back for the patient. I'm not sure why your arse is chapped over this thread but you seem a little slow to recognize my brother's concern. Here let's make this easy, let's flip the script and substitute you for my brother. Are you implying you wouldn't be concerned you've potentially been exposed to COVID19 and you won't know for sure until your coworker's wife's test results are known? Just carry on? No worries about being around the coworker who's going home everyday to a wife who's definitely been exposed to COVID19?
