"The reason this crash was so severe is because the crash attenuator, a highway safety barrier which is designed to reduce the impact into a concrete lane divider, had been crushed in a prior accident without being replaced," according to Tesla.

They never run out of excuses for why their cars frick up do they?

More gems
quote:

"The driver had received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive," Tesla wrote. "The driver's hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision."

quote:

Tesla said the driver had "about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view" of the lane divider before the fatal crash.

Those don't sound like excuses.

They sound like easily verifiable facts.

Tesla's system, semi autonomous, has been rejected by major OEM's because it needs to driver to override it because it's still primitive yet in testing the OEMs found that the driver is often lulled into a false sense of security and also that even when fully "woke" the reaction time is a lot slower than a human alone or a fully autonomous system.

Doing research and development on public roads and putting the public in danger sucks.

"We're sorry the barrier our car drove into at full speed due to our infallible software was inadequate to keep the car from exploding"

"California should do a better job of fixing the things we crash into."

I don't really feel sorry for the guy. His family is on record saying he told Tesla's service department and them there were issues with autopilot, yet he continued to use the shite.

It’s a good thing humans don’t drive into barriers or pedestrians. Why we hold automation to a far higher standard than humans is a bit beyond me.

Liability reasons.

If a vehicle can't detect and avoid non perm barriers, they most likely shouldn't be on the road.

I'm working with phycists independent of Tesla, who are working on the LIDAR used in the vehicles. They've obtained the video and data of the accident that killed that female pedestrian and are studying all the data to determine what was missed by the system that prevented the car from braking when the woman was on the road. I'm told there are numerous studies being conducted on this data and that this will be a topic of discussion in an open forum at the SPIE Conference in Orlando next month.

Really

Let's hear some examples of OEMs whose autopilots are approved for SAE level 4 operation

This all sounds like shite their superduper software should handle.

Yep, I'm still a bit uneasy about driverless technology.

Yeah. My understanding of human nature leads me to conclude that even a near perfect semi-autonomous system cannot succeed.

You can barely get drivers to pay attention when they're actually driving!

If, overall, automation reduced accident deaths by half, even though the deaths that did occur were of the type that seemed easily avoidable by humans, would that not be a good thing?

All we know about is the accidents that happen. We never know about the accidents that a human might have caused but that automation prevented.

Yes. However until the vehicle is proven to sense temporary changes or rapid vehicle movements I prefer to drive myself.

I'm sure this will come with time, but I don't even like other people driving, much less automation.

I'm personally very much pro automation.

This entire "zero defect" approach to it is silly because it isn't replacing something is anywhere NEAR zero defect.

That said. I just don't see how SEMI autonomous will work because of...........well.........the fricking human part of the "semi" equation.
