Ted Cruz and AOC join push for over the counter birth control
LINK /

Over-the-counter pill proposals gain ground. It's a rare policy that brings together the likes of staunch conservatives like Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and socialist stars like New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—especially when the policy is undeniably libertarian. But anything goes in 2019, and for a change it's working out in a way that favors freedom.

Cruz and Ocasio-Cortez want to make birth control pills available over-the-counter (OTC)—i.e., without requiring users to get annual prescriptions from a doctor or pharmacy.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted last Friday: "Psst! Birth control should be over-the-counter, pass it on." (She followed up with "It should be free, too"—but, hey, baby steps…)

I was glad to see some folks respond to her tweet with links to a Reason piece I wrote in January, which details how it used to be Republicans who opposed deregulating the pill and Democrats who supported it recently it's been "liberals, not conservatives, who are holding the pill hostage for political gain."

In April, Sens. Joni Ernst (R–Iowa) and Cory Gardner (R–Colo.) introduced the "Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act," an attempt to help speed up the over-the-counter approval process for hormonal contraceptives (a process that must originate in an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

Ocasio-Cortez is among the few congressional Democrats this decade—maybe the only one—to come out in support of OTC birth control.

Yesterday, Cruz responded to her tweet, saying "I agree. Perhaps, in addition to the legislation we are already working on together to ban Members of Congress from becoming lobbyists, we can team up here as well. A simple, clean bill making birth control available over the counter. Interested?"

I never understood why a prescription was needed. You’d probably prevent a ton of teens from getting g pregnant because they are too embarrassed or afraid to ask their parents to help them get a prescription.

Because it can increase the risk of blood clots, can really frick a woman's body, and you need to be sure the woman knows she needs to take it at the same time every day. It can also really frick with your migraines.

It's not a benign drug by any means and sometimes even needs a dose tweak.

I'm not against it being OTC but might should be behind the counter, kinda like Sudafed so you have to at least talk to someone.

it's a harmful pill with tons of side effects, a very necessary and specific schedule, and alot of interactions with other medications.

Planned parenthood will lobby hard against it.

If a woman/girl is old enough to be taken to pound town then she should be old enough to read directions on a pill bottle.

I say give complete and total immunity to the drug manufacturers, put some warnings and instruction on the labels and let them have at it. Minimal cost for lawsuit protections and there ya go.

I’d be for giving the pills away. The cost would offer an unbelievable return on investment considering the number of out of wedlock babies being born/aborted. I’d like to see a default pill which would be required to take IN ORDER to reproduce.

So maybe after the first dozen women die with pulmonary embolism from OTC birth control, Ted and AOC will be sued for malpractice.

If birth control becomes over the counter and it's completely up to women to read and follow directions without ever talking to a doctor then 1) no one should ever trust that again ever. And 2) strokes and bloodclots will skyrocket.

Easy Tiger.

It’s about 1 out of 1,000 women who develop clots on birth control. If we assume 1,000,000 new birth control users with it being over the counter, that’s 1,000 more clots.

Assuming all those clots result in strokes, that’s 1,000 more strokes for a total increase of .1%.

It makes sense as it ends up doing the same thing as abortion but in a more acceptable manner.

Ok. Can't other over the counter stuff do the same? A baby can also impact a woman's body pretty significantly too...and the rest of her life.

Like you said, make it behind the counter. I'd be fine with that, as I don't see any further benefit there is from hearing a doctor read the instructions vs a pharmacist?

Insurance typically prefers over the counter as they no longer have to pay for it.

benadryl is equally dangerous. kids take it after an allergy attack and passout while driving from being tired because it is a side-effect.
