State of Mississippi coming for the Morganza to open to ease Miss River flow

This is going to get interesting.
State of MS pissed at Corp for opening Bonnet-Carre spillway which then pushed tons of freshwater along MS coast killing wildlife, fisheries, and tourism along their coast.
They coming for the opening of the Morganza as an alternative.
Can’t say I disagree with this position.

The state of Mississippi, concerned a bad flood season this spring will hurt its coast and economy, is pressing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to change how it handles high waters on the Mississippi River.

Mississippi says it wasn’t consulted before the Corps decided last year to open the Bonnet Carré Spillway in Louisiana twice for a total of 123 days, which caused “unprecedented devastation upon the Mississippi Sound” when river water flowed in, according to a federal civil lawsuit the secretary of state’s office filed in late December.
quote:
The nearby Morganza Spillway, which floods farmland and swamp in Louisiana when open, wasn’t used last year, sparing that area west of the Mississippi River from comparable damage.

Hope they've done something to strengthen that morganza structure

Bonnet Carré Spillway opens into Pontchartrain near Norco, right?
So all that freshwater would be pouring out of Pontchartrain into the Mississippi Sound?
What are the negatives to opening Morganza (in a non catastrophic flood situation)? Any infrastructure or agricultural get flooded?

No problem if Corps of Engineer agrees to fully dredge the Atchafalaya River and Basin to be able to handle the flow and accommodate vessel traffic after the additional sediment flows. Corp hasn’t done so in 50 years.

They'll give you a lot of reasons but the biggest one is this:
Bunch of politicians get their camps flooded

Oh pretty please Mississippi, can we open the spillway to avoid a catastrophic disaster threatening a major urban population?
Curious though.
Why is opening the Morganza the most taboo things whenever it’s brought up as a possibility.
The swelling of the Miss river is going to continue.
The sensible thing would be to alleviate the flow in a way that has the most minimal impact on people and property.
Morganza opening would accomplish this.
Sorry if some Baws lose their fishing and hunting grounds.
Dem the breaks.

Probably does a lot less damage. That's close to the annual dead zone anyway.

Morganza seems like the obvious option as long as the structure is in good shape (no idea if they fixed it or whatever).
I’m no geologist be any means but redirecting flow down the Actchafalaya more often isn’t going to increase the odds of the Mississippi River re-course outside of the structural integrity of Morganza itself right?
This year really fricked our seafood economy, especially with the flesh eating bacteria on top of it.

Waveland and Bay St. Louis beaches were closed from July to Nov bc of the opening of the BC. MS tourism really took a hit.

There's no excuse for Morgan City to not have a levee around it, especially after all this time.
This year is probably going to be pretty rough year for the River (worse than last year if there's more snowfall up north). We're still a month out from the beginning of the traditional high-water period and we're already over 38 feet. If this continues along the path of last year, expect further decimation of coastal fisheries.

There is levees and flood walls designed to handle the Morganza. It’s the clogged up channel that prevents flow and halts commerce

Sounds like the corps needs to get off their asses and dredge

This.
They got first crack at picking that land up for a song, took full advantage, and now want to protect that interest.

Explain what you’re talking about for an ignorant person. Especially the song part.

Morganza protects Baton Rouge and Bonnie carre protects New Orleans levees. Opening morganza only has a nominal effect in lowering water levels in New Orleans.
