That’s a good point but everyone can benefit from others education. If “no kids Joe” gets in an auto accident he probably wants the paramedic on the scene to have some knowledge. No kids Joe probably wants hwy engineers with the basics down. He probably wants a military protecting his country with at least a GED.. etc

Thats also a good point. That said, what percentage of the general population fall into those fields?
I guess my perspective is based on the general downward spiral..imo..of what subjects and values are being taught by far too many schools.

The increase would go to fund, building new schools.

Limestone County which is next to Madison appears to have just gamed the system to accomplish this. I live in Madison(but on the Limestone side).

My property appraisal from the tax office this year went up almost 25%!

I fricking wish.

This just isn't true.

You basically can't fricking buy a house in Madison for what it's listed for right now.

And, in my particular neighborhood, at least the last 8-10 homes that have sold, weren't even on the market!

Realtors post in our HOA page asking for anyone THINKING about selling.

Back when it was all cottonfields, I probably rode my 4 wheeler through your yard, on my way to the strip joint.

It's gone downhill fast.

The people that I am talking about, are like me. We hate Madison now. We lived there back when there were only 500 people there, and that was the place that we loved.

How did we allow ourselves to become serfs to the state?

Serfs to the state is worse and it implies you'd have to buy your freedom if that's even allowed.

Property taxes mean you don't really own that property because there's a way to take it away from you whenever the gob. decides they want you to pay to retain that which you thought you owned.

See NOLA millage elections. "Vote for it, you won't have to pay"

Why should people with no children have to fund their schools?
do you want to pay now to educate them and make them employable, or pay later to take care of (house and feed) them

fricking Alabama.

That place use to be nice, before too many houses got built, and too many people moved in.
Plenty of space and freedom.
There were a handful of men that thought that making Madison grow was a good thing, and I knew every one of those people. They're all dead now and have been for quite a while. Pretty sure that if they saw what actually happened to Madison, they would be kicking themselves. They weren't the types of guys that would want to live there.

Thats the theory.

Why are people having a hard time finding young people to work?
Why are so many young people becoming "activists" for more free stuff? Where did they learn those values??

The notion that non-parents don't have a vested interest in quality education is downright comical.

This non-parent sure doesn't think I'm getting a bang with my bucks. My God, remedial classes are being offered in college because of the failure to educate kids in high school. Pretty damn disgusting if you ask me.

Were you there when there was still a soda fountain at The drug store? Or True's store was still open? That was the place to go, for snow cones. You just had stay on old man True hard, to make sure he put enough syrup on it. He was stingy as hell with the syrup.
The Western Auto was next door to True's and the was an old man that worked there named Mr.Gillespie, his wife was a teacher at The Old Madison School. He thought all boys were out to steal something if they came in the Western Auto, so he would follow you everywhere. Me and My friend use to go in there and then split up, so he had to try and chase both of us. We had no intentions of stealing, but we liked to make him chase us around.

Where do you live now? I live in Clay County,Al. now, pretty sure that I don't have to worry about it growing too fast.

This is my biggest complaint with property tax votes. People with no skin in the game shouldn't be allowed to vote on them.

I don't understand. What's wrong with growth? Huntsville/Madison is one the BEST places to be in the US for Tech jobs, second only to Silicon Valley. Factor in CA politics and cost and that makes Madison even more attractive.

I grew up in a small town and while I can understand the appeal, it's not for everyone either. Especially when it comes to different types of professions.

Some is OK, too much, is too much. That's been the Case in Madison, for most of the long time residents. Only a few are still there, and they're mostly not happy. When they sell the last of their family property off, they will be gone too, and more cracker box houses will go up, or apartments or schools, maybe strip malls.

Nothing I hate worse than property taxes.

Work for years to save enough to apply as a down payment on a home.

Work for thirty more years to pay off your mortgage.

Achieve the American dream of homeownership.

Fail to pay your property tax and discover who really owns that home.

Madison pretty much can't help but grow.

Jobs are moving to this area by the shite ton and Madison City schools are light years more attractive than all of the surrounding areas.
