Typical Dem-run state?!?!

After a recent trip to HI, came back appalled by the state of the roads, bridges, etc. in Honolulu. I won't even get into the state of the city, the trash, the homeless everywhere, the so-called ghost road projects. Their main highway, H1, is unpaved. It looks like it was milled down for repaving and......repaving never happened. Bridges are crumbling, everything looks ancient, shows terrible lack of maintenance, has potholes and careless signage.

And this is the capital of the state. Rural roads are often barely paved. Either BHO's infrastructure program never reached HI or whatever money they got was squandered on who knows what else. 'Paradise' it is not when it comes to infrastructure.

You'd think he would have taken better care of his "birthplace".

Hawaii is a shithole outside of tourist areas along the beaches. Inland neighborhoods are dumps.

While I wouldn't doubt poor governance plays a part, it's also a group of islands in the middle of the ocean and the logistics and materiel aren't quite as easy to implement and acquire as something continental.

They don't see fit to fix their roads and bridges and homeless problems, but they just passed a law imposing net neutrality on all companies doing business in HI. Priorities.....

Without tourism and the military it would be worse than Mississippi

Ala Moana park in central Waikiki is full of homeless people who've set up camp. Fodor's tourist guide warns tourists against walking there in the evening. In central Waikiki..... Some beaches we walked on stank of human urine and had homeless people just wandering around aimlessly. I would love to wholeheartedly recommend a trip to HI to people, but the things we saw keep me from doing so. The natural beauty is, still, breathtaking but threatened by the trash and neglect.

Maui is much better run. Roads are paved and relatively well maintained. It doesn't look rich, but it's clean and there were very few bums. Almost none.

Didn't make it to Maui this time around. We were there 20 years ago. Really like Lahaina. Things in Honolulu look much worse than 20 years ago. Crying shame!

Most of the shitty areas on Oahu are on or near the coast. Only inland shithole I can think of is Wahiawa.

Yeah it was nice.

The island is very sparsely populated and everyone knows everyone, so bums don't really get much in the way of panhandling. Also, a lot of the island is farmland and it's hard to get anywhere by foot or public transit. Not an area conducive to homelessness.

They’re certainly able to boat that stuff in to build condos.

They can boat anything in. It just depends what you're willing to pay.

You obviously believe in excuses for neglect. And who knows what else. Excuses, excuses! They really seem to work well for Hawaii!
