I’ll bet most of the diners that patronize that
place don’t give much of a shite.

It’s actually a good idea. They should break out every employment cost as a line item on bills.

Do it, Progressives. Go for it. I double dare you!

it's optional... don't see anything wrong with it.

Easy

Just don't tip if you see this on your bill.

Most places would just increase their charges without telling the custom

Yeah, like every business that ever existed. When you buy a car, you don't get a breakdown of the salesman's healthcare plan. When you go to your accountant, does he show you what his healthcare costs? I don't see why this is necessary to show.

If you want to increase your costs to cover your employee's healthcare, I'm 100% on board with that. I assume you'll get better employees, have better service, and create an experience that's worth the price increase. Spelling it out by putting it on the receipt and then guilt tripping people by making it optional is completely and totally pandering and attention seeking behavior.

Notice they are now “evolving” the narrative to people embracing those passed along costs. It’s not long and the left will be talking about a national “health” tax surcharge on federal income taxes to cover Medicaid for all.

I’ll give these restaurants a little credit for being honest and putting it in the bill.

I think just raising the price would be more honest. You would know beforehand what the price is going to be.

At least it's optional, but it's really just a way for them to guilt the customer into paying for it.

Whats the big deal? That cost is being passed on to the customer anyway, they just chose to show it.

re: Some restaurants embrace putting health care surcharges on diners' checks
Pretty much any business that offers health care to their employees incorporates that cost into their cost of goods, services and pay scale. This place is doing just that, only they are taking the next step to virtue signal to their customers/employees they are doing so. They easily could have just increased the cost of goods 3% and the customers would have been none the wiser.

It's a marketing ploy. (Some) customers get to feel like they are "doing good" by the poor service industry workers. The restaurant potentially gets to hire a better workforce because they offer healthcare. Everyone feels like they are a great person, even though this could have quietly been accomplished by charging an extrat $0.45 for Popovers and Casarecce.

I just wouldn't incorporate the HC cost into my tip. Honestly, if your customer base is mostly liberals (and in Austin it very well could be), this probably isn't a bad business strategy

You can't enjoy a good meal somewhere else? Is this the only restaurant in the area with a decent meal?

My point is, if this restaurant is not offering something VERY special, then they are the one playing the game... I'll walk and find somewhere else to enjoy a meal...

Why can't we just go back to the days when waiting tables was a crap job with crap pay, because it is, and people just accepted that and tried to better themselves so they didn't have to wait tables anymore.

Get a skill, get a job with benefits. Leave the waiting tables to the college kids.

Why are people getting bent out if shape about this? The way I see it is that for every restaurant that offers health insurance to their employees that's one less person on Medicaid.

We see this kind of stuff all the time on our utility bills. They are just called something else. Shall we deduct those from the payment as well? How would that work out?

Saw it for the first time on Friday at an Italian restaurant in Minneapolis. 3% added for employee health benefits. Paid it like a sucker

I would’ve left a fat ZERO, on the tip line.

Is this the only restaurant?

If I see it on my bill, I'll probably pay it then let them know why I'm not coming back.

Really? Most charges on a utility bill are placed there by law or are allowed by a PSC or other entity that oversees the utility...

They aren't offering health insurance to their employees, they are guilting their customers into offering it.

I bet if they put the insurance on the menu like it was another item they offered, no one would buy it. Now that would be honesty and transparency.
