Society’s Value of Life

I’m always interested in this. The perfect examples of this are hate crimes or crimes against the police. We, as a society, have determined in both cases that due to the nature of the victim (first responder) or the nature of the perpetrator (racists/homophobe), we make the punishment harsher because of the value we place on them.
That leads us to today’s situation. Our leadership has seen fit to shut everything down. It’s in the public’s best interest to quarantine to save lives. However, not everything is shut down. Not everyone is in quarantine. As a society, we have determined that for the waiter/waitress and their customers, they need to be protected and not allowed to work. However, for the grocery clerk and bag boy, well...... We kinda need them so if they die, frick it.
If it was TRULY about public safety. If it was TRULY about protecting the public. EVERYTHING and EVERYONE would be shut down. Alabama has shut down schools, but left the state run liquor stores open. Think about that.

That $2.2T the government threw at it is $2.2 million per life if 1 million lives are "saved".
think the number is anywhere near 1 million potential deaths?
There is a lot more being lost that the $2.2T from actions the government has taken.

You nailed it. From bankers to IT workers, many “essential workers” are being asked to risk their health by interacting with others, in jobs you can’t possibly do without having a thousand encounters with “droplets”. But no special testing, gear, access to healthcare, pay, just frick them..get your arse to work.

Even if lots of people are starving to death in their homes?

Hate crimes are stupid; NO ONE deserves more protection than another person. I do think crimes against LE should be handled differently; let 'em turn off the body cams for 15 minutes...problem solved.

I think we can agree that grocery stores were left open for convenience as were the liquor stores in Alabama and the dispensaries in Colorado. We could get these things without the social interaction.
