Silver lining to the shutdown
Reality will hit with empty paychecks. These 800k people can take the opportunity to look themselves in the mirror and realize that they are a “nonessential” asset in a woefully inefficient business. Do something about it - go make yourself essential and find work where furloughs aren’t an annual threat.

I still don't see how people with gubment jobs can't make it for a few months without a paycheck. They know they are going to eventually get back-pay.

Spend less than you earn.

Yeah we don’t need people emptying trash cans and cleaning restrooms in our Parks do we?

Non-violent prisoners and welfare folks can do that.

Maybe maybe not. Is there a volunteer campaign that can tackle important but nonessential tasks like that? Get a rotation middle schools and high schools outside for a day of cleanup and service.

The Gender Scouts could handle it.

The radio said something to the effect that 70% of the 800k do not have $500 in savings.....

For the love of god schools need to teach home economics so kids can balance a check book and cook a meal.

Dave Ramsey - his preaching should be a high school course.

Get middle schoolers and high schoolers to clean public restrooms? You’ve lost your mind.

Maybe get preschoolers to do the water testing and bridge inspections?

I think it’s a platinum lining. If you can’t live without a couple of paychecks you need to seriously get your shite together before you have to eat cat food when your wrinkled arse is no longer employable. Lots of people need a bitch slap.

Financial irresponsibility. These folks will be the main ones looking for someone to take care of them when the real sheet hits the fan.

100 percent agree. Honest truth is many are working elsewhere during the shutdown and will still get backpay. Most have expected a shutdown for a while and were ready for it. The people I feel bad for are the ones like a buddy of mine that just got transferred. He literally just got to his new post and his moving expenses, etc can’t be reimbursed until this is over.

Almost all employees (private sector included) are nonessential

At least the parks are open. Trump didn't close them like Obama did only as a political ploy.

I don’t believe that for a second. I will say that the “seasonal” employees are treated like crap and make very very little. These are often the people you see in the Parks doing school programs, working in visitor centers, etc.

A large part of that 800k are the admin that pay the bills and the people that administer contracts. They do ok and I expect they have plenty of money put away. Most people just make a vacation out of it.

When Obama was in office the Park service was required to close and go out of their way to make sure the Public was effected. Trump has kept the Parks open so the left is trying to make to 800,000 employees the face of the shutdown. They are failing because many of those 800k are Trump supporters who support the shutdown.

Glad they are open, personally I’d like to see 2 year appropriations for the Park Service enacted by Congress so it never gets used as a political pawn again.

These folks knew the risks of government shut downs when they took the job, find another that does not have risks OF SOME KIND, good luck with that

Trump really needs to hammer home that THEIR leaders find illegals more important than them. Illegals. A CR is all ready to go to start them working again, but Pelosi thinks illegals are more important.
