Shoulfd a free society allow human euthanasia?

The practice is illegal in most states. Should it be?

Absolutely.
I've never understood why we consider "quality of life" for our pets, but not our loved ones.
It's asinine.

I've changed my view on this after watching my grandfather pass. It took days of already being brain dead, being starved by his hospice care, before he finally passed. It was cruel. Who would possibly want to go out like that? In these types of cases, I don't understand why euthanasia isn't allowed. I'm not sure I feel the same way about someone with years to live who has just been diagnosed a terminal illness.

This. If you're sound of mind & there are licensed/monitored medical professionals willing to assist, then people should be able to exit peacefully if they desire.

I feel this is just another in a series of ploys to cheapen human life in general. It will eventually trickle down to where those who opt for this are not even in a very difficult situation. Now, I do recognize there are some extreme situations where this might not be the worst thing however we all know it won't stop there thus the firewall of having it illegal, in my view, should stay intact.

It is possible to support this and still oppose it being expanded, although I will admit you are probably correct.

Any who has watched a family member disintegrate before their very eyes can understand the need for euthanasia. Sure it could be abused, but if I am being honest, once my father was referred to Hospice, they basically euthanized him with the morphine cocktails they had him on for pain...

Should be able to write it into your will.
No. If you wanna kill yourself, be my guest. Just don't get other people to do your work for you.
A lot of the same people who want euthanasia also want government-run healthcare. That combo will be a disaster when the government decides who is worth trying to heal and who isn't.

Should be able to write it into your will.
Most states have a similar document to address medical care called a “Living Will” (in Texas, a Directive to get up physicians). Currently, it can only address withholding life-sustaining treatment, but not permit eurhanasi.
That should be easy enough to change.

Yes see I grapple with these extreme situations BUT if we are honest, we have caved in so many lines in the sand of moral construct already. A lot of these remaining lines are being encroached upon and flat out assaulted, just take a gander at some of the stories in the headlines today. Given human nature, most of us realize that things that began with good intentions most often devolve into a cesspool of unintended consequences. My concern is that if we keep ceding territory to the lowest common denominator, we will learn that this is what has caved in many powers in the past and a large leap towards this comes when we devalue human life in particular.

Absolutely...but once the initial hurdle is crossed, the hope of opposition to expansion fades rapidly in most cases.
I am sorry about your Grandfather however. I know that's tough to go through for a family!

The problem is how do you prevent murders from being covered up as putting someone down?
Very tricky situation.

An I qualified my statement that it could be abused...
However, watching my father go from a totally healthy person to a withered, shell of a man who did not recognize his own kids in the final month because he had a stroke and was one so many meds "to make him comfortable"...well, I know damn well my father would have said enough of this Shiite...end it, not tomorrow, not in an hour, but right friggin now...there was nothing "moral" about him "being alive".

Yes
Even as I have teetered on the line between theist and atheist I have always felt that sentient life is pretty damned rare in this universe, and that makes it special. Even watching my wife in her final moments did I ever think she would be better off if we just ended it now.

We ain't a free society, but if we were, then yes it should be.

I do not believe doctors who have taken the hippocratic oath and went to school for a decade to save lives should be obligated to execute people. I think it is a pretty dangerous road to take considering someone with power of attorney could decide whether you or your mother/father/brother/sister should be killed or not without your consent. When someone is untreatable and in end of life care, they pretty much give them regular intervals of morphine/opioids to keep them comfortable anyway.
