My favorite quote from the pilot..'I was shocked when my plane went straight up after releasing. I've never dropped anything that heavy.'

My Dad was on Okinawa waiting to go to Japan, and my uncle was in Czechoslovakia waiting to do the same. Glad the war ended shortly thereafter.

I had the pleasure of meeting Col Paul Tibbets (Enola Gay Pilot). Had him sign the wing of my model B-29.. Very cool..

They had made dozens and dozens of practice runs with dummy bombs modeled on the size and weight of their eventual payload. Why would he be surprised? He should have experienced the same thing dozens of times during those practice runs. Maybe he was referencing those first practice runs.

Or maybe it had something to do with the terrain or the weather conditions.

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." Attributed to Yamamoto in Tora, Tora, Tora! Don't mess with a sleeping giant that has an A bomb!

My father participated in the amphibious assault at Iwo Jima in February and March of 1945. The V Division lost so many marines there they were pulled back to Hawaii and were recovering, training and getting resupplied for an assault on Japan. He did participate in the occupation prior to getting discharged. He said that we were very lucky that they dropped the bombs. The bombs cost hundreds of thousands of lives but is estimated that it saved many as a million US and Japanese lives by not having to invade Japan.

I remember going to the "picture show" to see it, 1970.

I got no problem with the Japanese of today but those from those times? Frick them. It was their fanaticism and delusions that made this necessary. I don't regret it for a minute. Peace through superior firepower.

Now, if there was only a way we could nuke libs en masse.

Have a great day.

Should have lit up Germany also for what they did with the gas chambers.

In terms of death toll, some of the fire bombing were as bad or worse yet the Japanese military did not want to give up.

Even with the two atom bombs and the Emperor's decision, some of the generals didn't want to surrender.
