Why don't they just go to a friggin' payday loan place?

Never spent a bunch of time in northern Virginia or D.C., but around here there are just as many payday loan places as McDonal's and Suways, and I be damned if I didn't go to Speedy Loans before I lined up at a soup kitchen or a restaurant giving away free meals to federal employees for the news cameras.

...If the Shutdown continues, I'm gonna borrow 10 million dollars, detail my grandpa's horse trailer and turn that bitch into a traveling payday loan place for federal employees!!!

Why waste your money, even in my little old town the banks are offering no interest loans to their members that are gov employees.

Most banks are offering 0 interest loans for up to $5000. Most of us aren’t going to need that, but it’s still pretty much horseshite if we have to dip into savings to wait for God knows how long on a big check that will be taxed to shite.

The people working, with deferred pay, and non-deferred bills aren't hard working people? Not only are they not getting paid, there is no end in sight. This is the longest in history, and parties seem even more opposed to making a deal today than they did 30 days ago. SOTH was just leaving the country for 7 days, they have no cares about getting this done, and therefore no good outlook on pay anytime soon.

I don’t mind if I have to dip into my savings because that’s what it’s for, situations such as these.

I assume most would find the 33%+ interest to not be prudent.

so you would advocate for them to go to one of these scam places

and then they'll get charged extremely high interest rates

and then in the event that they can't pay it back, you'll call them bums that are irresponsible?

Do we not have FEDERAL credit unions that would loan them their regular pay with their expected back pay as collateral? I bet they all got letters inviting them to apply for such loans before the shutdown started.

That’s fine, but it’s not like I’m hurt or lost my job. I’m still having to work while some a-hole, partying Dems play keep away with my money.

The last place I would recommend anyone going is a payday loan place. Furloughed employees can’t win for losing with some of you people. If we don’t have at least three months pay saved up, we’re not fiscally responsible. If some get loans and can’t pay them back due to not getting paid, they’re bums and financially irresponsible.

A shite ton of banks are offering interest free loans.

Furloughed federal workers offered 90-day, interest-free loans by Washington Federal.

On Wednesday, Seattle-based bank Washington Federal will begin offering interest-free, 90-day loans to furloughed federal workers for the equivalent of up to six missed paychecks.

The program, which appears to be the first of its kind, is open to any affected resident in Washington state and the seven other states where Washington Federal operates. Those are Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.

Colorado's Alpine Bank has set aside $5 million to help furloughed workers. If you can prove you're an unpaid federal employee, you can get an interest-free loan the same day you apply.

Provident Bank in New Jersey recently announced it will cancel mortgage and credit card late fees for federal workers and allow them to break their certificates of deposit early without any penalties.

Huntington, a bank based in Columbus, Ohio, with some 960 branches across the Midwest, is offering a "low rate, quick loan program" for customers who are federal employees.

Some of the more generous offers are coming from credit unions.

"Credit unions across the country are stepping up to help federal employees and families affected by the government shutdown," said Ryan Donovan, the chief advocacy officer at the Credit Union National Association.

Veridian Credit Union has a Government Advance Loan for impacted members, with no interest. Space Coast Credit Union is offering an interest-free loan to members experiencing a financial hardship because of the government shutdown.

Launch Federal Credit Union has a zero-percent interest rate for loans up to $3,000 to federal government employees. Navy Federal Credit Union is doing the same, with a limit of $6,000. For more information, check out its frequently asked questions page.

The U.S. Employees Credit Union is providing interest-free loans to impacted members for 60 days, regardless of their credit score.

Justice Federal Credit Union is offering unsecured loans with low interest rates to any impacted workers at the Department of Justice or Department of Homeland Security. LINK

A much better option than one of those check cashing scams is a 0.0% credit card. Some are no payments/interest free for 15 months.

I bet I wish people wouldn't talk based on assumptions, rather than facts or knowledge. The issue working against everyone that is currently furloughed or shut down is that this is a very small portion of government that is currently shut down. With it being such a small subset there are less people feeling it, less advocacy groups as the DoD isn't affected.

With that being said there was less action taken by these entities. In the 2013 USAA paid all of our paychecks out like normal, knowing the direct deposit could come in the end. Navy Federal offered this this time around, USAA has not. USAA is the primary banking entity for military/coast guard and likely Federal employees as well as many come from prior service or military families.
