Senate passed a bill that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday
LINK

quote:

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Joe Biden for his signature.

quote:

The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements.

It’s a day worth celebrating, but I’m hoping this isn’t going to be a con to do away with the 4th of July as a federal holiday. I can’t see Biden doing it, but Kamala absolutely.

I don't really care what the government says is a holiday, but do we have to keep using this stupid, pseudo-English name for it?

Dumb

The end of slavery was when the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 1865.

God I hate stupid people.

Let's take time to remember all those that shed blood during the bloody war between the states.

I think The end of slavery is worth celebrating, but theJuneteenth is really a Texas holiday,

Slavery was still legal in Maryland and Kentucky Until 1965. But the 13th was rarified and proclaimed in December which already has too many holidays eating into it.

Congrats.

My wedding anniversary is January 6th. We'll never go another year not hearing about that on our anniversary...

Well, that is just your white version of history... why you got a problem with the black man getting another holiday?

To be fair, we often choose symbolic dates / documents, etc.

I mean, by your logic, July 4, 1776 is not really a cool date because the idea was not "settled" until the war ended.

I don't care much about Juneteenth. But, it is not "stupid" to use a symbolic even to represent a final outcome that happens ("legally") later.

Old laws being on the books =/= still being legal.

I don't have a problem with it, per se, but if we do, then I don't ever want to hear a fricking word about slavery or the slave trade in the future from ANYONE.

Excuse me, "the enslaved," as they were referring to them in A Million Little Things.

First line of my postS

I just Think the freeing of slaves in Maryland and Kentucky are worth celebrating too.

Although it probably has more to do with when the holiday would fall than when the slaves were freed.
