The conversation got off to an awkward start, but both men gradually eased up and settled into a polite rhythm. They disagreed on almost everything, but that was inevitable: Bessenger chairs a Confederate heritage party and Akhet leads a local black nationalist movement. "We've always been at odds with them," Akhet told NBC News in a phone interview on Tuesday evening, referring to the Confederate group. "Bessenger is one of the most polarizing figures in the city. But we needed to have a discussion."

We respect each other," Bessenger, the chair of the South Carolina Secessionist Party, told NBC News in a separate phone interview Tuesday night. And so the two men decided to team up on "The Charleston Accord," an agreement to foster dialogue between their communities and encourage peaceful protest.

I mean, I can appreciate that, but what a sad picture.

For all the crap SC takes from Yankees about being racist and backwards, we sure do seem to handle racial strife better than most places.

People need to realize the media wants you to fight. Don't watch and talk to people and your life will be much better.

Yeah, it's really sad that we've gotten to the point where basic civility is a heartwarming story.

That picture should be plastered on social media. Americans basically get along. Who is it that's trying to drive us apart?

This all means nothing, there is no group or politician or any other person that can make you treat someone else with respect. Each of us has to decide how we react to situations and other people. Each person has to decide if it is the case to disagree with someone but respect their right to their view and to disassociate with them if needed.

If the Alt-Left would have never showed up, the KKK would have just had their little protest and be ignored mostly and go their way. Ignoring many time is more powerful then any kind of counter protest.

Been in Charleston all day. Haven't seen a single protest or issue.

But neither of these groups want to be Americans
