A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with an alleged offensive message posted on Twitter about Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Sir Tom, who captured the hearts of the nation with his fundraising efforts during the first coronavirus lockdown, died in Bedford Hospital last Tuesday morning after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Second World War veteran’s family said the last year of the 100-year-old’s life was “nothing short of remarkable” and that he had “experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of”.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “On Friday 5 February 2021, we received a report of an offensive tweet about Sir Captain Tom Moore who died on Tuesday 2 February.

“A 35-year-old man has subsequently been arrested and charged in connection with communication offences and is due to appear at Lanark Sheriff Court on Wednesday 17 February.

I did very little digging, and here is the tweet:
quote:

"The only good Brit soldier is a deed one, burn auld fella, buuuuurn."

I think we can all agree, or most us can, that is an absolutely despicable, vile thing to say. No doubt this guy was looking for attention. And the Streisand Effect is clearly in play here now.

I know this not America, and we supposedly have free speech, but with the censorship we’ve seen from Big Tech recently, is there anyone that supports the US government charging people for offensive speech like this? I know our board’s resident leftists will probably sit this one out.

Being an immature troll is lame. But it shouldn't be a crime.

European speech protections are woefully inadequate

Seems like every other month, there is a story of a person jailed for offensive Statements

Depends on who is being insulted according to our leftist friends. You could probably have found 1000 tweets significantly worse than that about Baron Trump on Twitter everyday during the Trump presidency.

Insult Baron Trump = good and honorable

Insult Beyonce = 5 years prison

I doubt the old vet even knew what the hell Twitter was. It's absolutely stupid to arrest someone over this.

Imagine internet trolling being a crime.

I'd be doing life without parole. Asinine.

Disrespecting the dead should get you a beating, but not a criminal conviction.

America is the only country currently on earth or in human history with the protections from government guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights is a completely unique and precious once in human history amazing document that radically and completely redefined the relationship between citizens and government.

And we take it for granted because our education system is a failure at actual education. Our general American society and population is so fat, lazy, and stupid we are actively fighting to give the government more power. Can anyone show me an example in human history when giving the government power and surrendering your rights was a good thing that worked out well for the people who did that?

Worse, progressive Bolsheviks and radical socialist in this county are openly advocating for an authoritarian oligarchy and they’re often too stupid to understand the consequences of what they are arguing for. I can think of 5 posters on this board who do this daily.

Remember when Obama came to office and they said schools can’t say things like “America is the best” because it disparages other countries? Remember when they said we can’t teach children to respect the flag and the constitution and the pledge because it’s racist and disparaging?

Liberals support the concept because they want to selectively enforce it against their enemies.

It's ironic, because those laws were definitely passed to target conservatives. But, laws tend to harm the lawless the most, so they always end up being used against leftists most. You'd think they'd catch on at some point, and stop passing new laws.

And that’s essentially what you have now with Big Tech. And I’m afraid with them controlling all 3 branches and the GOP being pussies anyway, it’s not looking bright.

“Big Tech” is not a public agency and can regulate speech on their platforms. The US government cannot stop anyone saying something dastardly, no matter how offensive; exceptions being some threats of personal harm or some speech that causes public panic.

When this failed republic starts arresting people for "communication offences", I'll be one of the first they come after. It won't end well for anyone...promise. It is coming though.

Nope.

Platform vs publisher is a battle we need to fight.

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have proven to be publishers and not platforms and so they should be directly liable for everything they allow posted on their sites. They should lose all of the protections of being a platform .

Idiots will tell you you can’t do this because Twitter and Facebook and google are necessary to our society. That’s why they control government and special interest. But this is an ignorant and short sited view.

A true platform can and should take their place. They are basically news outlets at this point anyway.

Disagree with him? Sure. It was a lousy thing to tweet.
Arrest him? Yer aff yer heid.

As I recall, the Scots aren’t too keen on the English, anyway.

May Cpt Sir Tom Moore RIP.
