Is there talk of scrapping the A-10? That would be a damn shame. It is incredibly useful, and I can't think of another weapon that can do it's job.
Anybody heard this, or is she full of shite?

There’s been talk about scrapping it for a while. I thought they had decided not to.

I think the Air Force wanted to scrap it. The Army and Marines demanded the plane or would fly it themselves.

It's literally been back and forth on the chopping block for the past several years

AF is saying it’s too expensive to maintain now and the F35s can take its role now as air to ground..

It’s role has become too narrow and it is an old airframe.

Nothing can replace the sound of an A10 zipping out some rounds. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

F35 is a joke and will never be the equal of the A-10.
USAF is corrupt and just wants another huge acquisition program.
A-10 may have a narrow role but it's a vital role and there is no other aircraft that can do it as well.
DoD should have just transferred it to the Army and USMC and purged all those pilots from the USAF.

That sucks, let the Army and Marines have them. I remember it was iffy a while ago but it has shines in the ME.
What is the J35? Forgive the ignorance, only thing I saw on that was a jet engine and a Saab 35...

There is not an airframe in history that can match the amount of lives the A-10 has directly taken and saved in modern combat.
Not an F15, F16, F14, AC130, MQ9 or any bomber. The A-10 is the most lethal battlefield asset on the planet.

I find this whole argument against the A-10 as shortsighted. The platform serves a very precise role on the battlefield as an anti-vehicle and ground support plane.
The only drawback to the A-10 is that it is vulnerable to attack from other aircraft. This is something that, arguably, it should never have to worry about as long as the Eagles and Vipers do their intended purpose. Gaining air superiority.
Look to history for an example, the Stuka was outdated before ww2 even began, but ask any German soldier and he will tell you that the sound of those slow and ugly flying tank removers above them gave them much comfort.
Incidentally, the leading Stuka Ace with over 500 tank kills was brought in to help propose ideas during the design for the A-10. He was very adamant about the installation of the 30mm cannon.

What else can take that much of a beating and still get home? Nothing.
How can they be too expensive to maintain? They already have supply chains for parts, assembly, and everything else. These should be some of the cheapest warplanes to make. USAF is part of the swamp if you ask me.

Seriously, the debate about scrapping the Warthog has been going on since the Berlin Wall came down.... do some research....
As long as Army and Marine units need close air support, it isn't going anywhere.....
Air Force might not like the plane (well, the pilots do), but the soldiers on the ground absolutely worship that life saving bad guy killing pig.

I know it was on and off several times, but I though it was decided to be useful for the foreseeable future. It has been a beast.

This is one pig that needs no lipstick. Sexy. The maneuverability alone is beautiful.

While we're at it, we should scrap the P-31. I hear everyone prefers the P-40.

The Warthog is a thing of beauty. I've got some great old pictures of when they first came out during our million dollar minute up at Bragg in the 70s if I just knew where to upload them to I could scan them and upload them.
We used to call them our flying tanks 40 years ago. Loved those aircraft.

The whole reason the USAF wants to get rid of the plane is for the same reason they are their own service: pride.
The AF brass is always desperate to show they have their own mission that is separate from the army or navy. Ground support of combat troops is not enough of a reason for them to be a separate service.

Thank you! I'll show that to my Son and see if he can help me figure that out PDQ. I've got some great pictures of the Warthogs in action. They were our babies ... our flying tanks. The 82nd's best friends ... and we've always said give them to us. The AF has never appreciated the A-10.
