The SCOTUS delivered a box containing an edible dick to Jeff Bezos.

Full disclosure, I did not read the ruling. Do they pay the sales tax the Seller’s location or do they pay the sales tax of the location of the buyer?

In practice: How does this work?

FL says to Amazon - collect 6% on all sales.
Amazon says "nah"
What is Florida's remedy? Tell Amazon "You can't sell in FL anymore?

What if Amazon does anyway. After all, it is BHP that went to Amazon's site, clicked the item, paid, etc. It is UPS that delivers it. What, UPS is gonna say "I won't take that package to BHP because FL and Amazon have a beef?

They have to have some sort of ledger system that shows every sale and delivery that is subject to audit. They charge sales taxes to the customer that they then must pay to the states.

Amazon says "nah"

Then they'll have a lawsuit to deal with. But there isn't much of an interest in not paying it as it is a straight pass through cost to the consumer.

Sales tax is collected based on the local tax rate for the shipping address. Online retailer then has to remit those sales taxes that were collected to the appropriate state/parish/city/county

Womp womp

Why Amazon is the winner of the Supreme Court sales tax ruling

quote:

Amazon should be helped because it is collecting sales tax in every state, while it is the Wayfairs of the world who are directly hurt," John Swain, a law professor at the University of Arizona, told CNBC.

quote:

The other half of products on Amazon are sold by third-party merchants on Amazon's marketplace. They potentially face the added burden of collecting sales tax in states that begin taxing online sales.

The Louisiana legislature has basically shut down today in order to figure out what this ruling means. They are trying everything they can to avoid a vote on taxes. But they are being told by tax experts that Louisiana's archaic and decentralized sales tax system is not set up to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling.... not even close.

In fairness, you were always supposedly responsible for paying the tax. It's just that unless the retailers assessed it, no one paid.

Not collecting sales tax on online sales would be compliant, no?

Time to attack income tax.

Where in the constitution is this?

Plus you pay sales taxes on the *with the* income after taxes.

Any what is this I hear about that SS tax will not ever pay out to us youngsters?

Cut, Cut, Cut Taxes

How hard would it be to take delivery at a location where there is no sales tax (i.e., Oregon), then have it reshipped to another location (your home)?

Seems like for large ticket item purchases this could have business potential.

You're thinking way too much into this.

Most large ticket items are probably also physically large. You'd probably pay more in additional shipping than you would in taxes. Then you run the risk of having it damaged or stolen.

Terrible idea

Big Supreme Court win on internet sales tax - about time! Big victory for fairness and for our country. Great victory for consumers and retailers.

You're being small-minded. Example:

I purchase a McIntosh Amp for $8200 online. Tax where I live would be $676.50. Insurance and shipping from Oregon would cost less than $100. Savings would be almost $600.

Still a terrible idea?
