Humans are constantly fighting a battle against the forces of entropy. Technology like any tool has to be maintained to exacting standards, and we're degrading our ability to maintain order. Our ascent to a life of ease wasn't linear and our return to a life of daily competition will not be linear. I wouldn't call that optimism on my part, because I've grown soft and old in this era of ease. The ones who are smart and grow up hard will control what comes next.
