Sadly, I think America is so far gone that we would never unite if another 9/11 happened

It is sad, but it is true. 17 years after the worst terrorist attack on American soil, September 11, 2001, America is so far gone politically between conservatives and liberals that if another 9/11-scale attack were to occur God forbid, America would not be united like it was the hours, days, weeks, months and a few years before 2003's Iraq War.

America is in a troubling state. I wonder if that day began the decline of America.

I don't understand this whole desire for unity and uniting. I want to live in a country where people have differences of opinion. When we're united, we get things like the War on Terror and the Patriot Act.

We’d see some attempt at uniting but you’d see finger pointing begin almost immediately due to social media..

Every tragedy is politicized now because people are so entrenched on one side are the other. People identify with party/ideology before being an American.

So do I. I want to live in a country where people have differences of opinion as well.

But we should be united on one front.

We are all Americans. We will defeat terror. We will not cower in fear. We will be vigilant, strong, tough-minded.

You can thank social media for that.

You need to turn off your television and go out and talk to people. Your country is not well represented by our shite media.

I’d want to say you’re exaggerating.

But a radical Muslim shot up a gay night club and the left did nothing except turn it into a gun control debate...which continues to blow my mind to this day.

The event was gobsmacking but credit where it should be due to GWB - he did truly unite the country in the days following 9/11. We could have devolved into chaos and we didn’t.

His decisions leading to Iraq were terrible, and ultimately led to our current state of polarization. But say what you will about W - he truly did rise to the occasion following 9/11. I’m not sure how he kept us together, but he did manage to do it.

I remember watching his first address after the attacks from Barksdale and looking at my friend sitting next to me and saying “Thank God Al Gore isn’t the President.” Can you imagine? Lord help us had that been the case.

Social media is behind much of our divisiveness. Social media and the internet will be the downfall of western civilization. I like social media, but I recognize it for what it is. An emotionless avenue for people to instantly post/tweet every shortsighted idea that pops into their head. Things get said that would never be said face to face in the “old days.”

Back then we would primarily deal with and debate people we knew and had certain commonalities with. Whether liberal or conservative, everyone born and raised in south LA likes cold beer, crawfish and Saints/Tigers football. At the end of the day we all love our state and want to better it. Now we can easily belittle people with far different views on life in Seattle on Facebook and vice versa. We’ve never been in their shoes and they’ve never been in ours.

It’s gotten so ugly and divided now that even liberals/conservatives hailing from the same culture and region can’t behave in a civil manner. There’s much more to it than just that, but at its core I guess social media has just expodentially increased the divide.

You don’t even realize you are proving his point.

Because you say shite like this, but then in your head you decide who is a “hardcore Trumpkin”...which will pretty much be everyone on the right of you.

You took a post about the country as a whole being divisive and instantly made it divisive.

Amazing what ONE Obama can do in 8 years, right?

Let me raise you a Trump for 8 years.

Stay vigilant and make sure people realize how crucial voting is in november. Be sure they know democracy and equal justice under the law is in its last hopes.

It's crucial we keep winning...

Assuming an event on the scale (or bigger) than 9/11, happened:

The media and the left would say it was 100% Trump's fault and America deserved it for being so awful.

These people existed after 9/11 too, little did we know in about 20 years they would take over the entire left wing of the country and the media.
