Hmmm, I wonder what the majority of the population in Crimea thinks.
There were a bunch of them on the streets waving Russian flags today and saying it was a good thing that the Russians had come.
Personally, I don't give a frick one way or the other.
I wonder how much of that is due to fact that the Russian military has control of Crimea. Putin is KGB so he would know all the old Soviet pr tricks. My solution would be to have Russia remove its troops and UN peacekeepers and observers go in. Then the people of Crimes vote to be stay in Ukraine or join Russia. Since they are currently Ukrainian I would say they need 2/3rd to leave if not they stay.

Historically, from what I've read, the population in that part of Ukraine is pretty much pro-Russian. Not necessarily the same opinions as in Kiev.

I think the breakdown in 60% russian and 40% Ukrainian (including the taters). That is why I said they need 2/3rds. If it was a simple majority then I could see even more problems.

And he's apparently trying his best on the PR front.
Got these pics and links from Reddit - Ukraine (who knows if they're truth but figured I'd share)
Imgur of some Russian lies and propoganda
Kiev protesters apparently protesting in Crimea
Ukraine nationalists carrying Russian army weapons?
Imgur of huge crowd with giant Russian flag
Comparison of flag propoganda and real life

Deadline has passed and no reports of violence / surrender.

Russia says they gave no ultimatum. Putin is sitting pretty with no European countries ready to impose significant "costs" for where they are right now and he knows that he has some leeway with the energy he supplies Europe and the market Russia offers. He knows he hadn't reached the line yet.

FIFY.

Neither did Chamberlain or the rest of Europe in the years leading up to World War II. It only took the deaths of 60 million people for them to start caring.

Just op ed pieces but they are written by Ukrainians:
Doesn't support Russian invasion
Says ethnic Russians don't support Putin's invasion

Stop being a drama queen. Whether or not Russia/Ukraine/NATO decides to go to war over this nonsense has NOTHING to do with WWII Germany.
Grow up and stop fantasizing about a real life band of brothers re-enactment.

Then you should stop being a narrow-minded a-hole. It's people like you who allow history to repeat itself. I'm not saying that World War III is just on the horizon, but why take a chance?

As a member of the U.S. Military, that's my ultimate dream. Don't you dare take that away from me.

Well, to be fair, from what I am seeing, people who are out waving Ukrainian flags are getting their asses kicked and don't have an army backing them up right now.

Your comparison of Austria to Crimea and the tired Chamberlain reference just doesn't fit here.
But, anyway, what, precisely, do you propose that the U.S. do? (please, can we just skip the narrative that Putin made this move because he perceives Obama as weak . . . that is so fixed in some of your minds that we'd both be wasting time discussing it).
ETA: oops, rolltide, were fricking with me? i can't keep up anymore.

Seriously, have you read up on the ethnic, historical and ethnic background of Crimea and its people? It is not necessarily the same as the rest of Ukraine.

Longer Term
Work with the EU to enact real sanctions on Russia. Figure out a way to really hurt them economically.
Start construction of the missile defense shield in Poland.
Consider asking the rest of Ukraine if they want to reconsider NATO membership.
Short Term
Move Naval assets into the Black Sea or Eastern Med.
Conduct large scale NATO military exercises in Poland/ Romania/ Bulgaria/ Turkey.

Okay. I don't have a problem with most of that. Let's see what happens.
