Russia says granting Ukraine membership of NATO will guarantee the beginning of World War Three
By Walter Finch
13 October 2022
• Russia has warned that Ukrainian membership of NATO will start World War 3
• Zelensky announced surprise bid for fast-track membership on September 30
• Russian officials called the move 'suicidal' and a 'guaranteed escalation'
• NATO previously said in 2008 that Ukraine would join the alliance 'some day'
• NATO planning nuclear readiness exercises in Europe with bombers in the air
Russia has threatened World War Three if its foe Ukraine is granted membership into NATO, a Russian Security Council official was quoted as saying on Thursday.
"Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to World War Three," TASS quoted Alexander Venediktov, the deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, as saying.
Venediktov, who is deputy to Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, a powerful Putin ally, said he felt Ukraine's application was propaganda as the West understood the consequences of Ukrainian membership of NATO.

Well, welcome to NATO, Ukraine. You know Joe won't be able to help himself.

Who is going to help Russia? The only one who could really help is China and they would be WAY better off letting Europe and the USA get bloodied and Russia being dominated.

Maybe that’s the way out. No formal acceptance into NATO and in exchange, Russia pulls out to pre-invasion borders. You sell it to the Ukrainians as they are already getting essentially Article 5 help right now and we’ll do it again in the future if Russia invades again. Putin can sell no formal admittance and the “neutrality” of Ukraine as a win domestically.

Things sure were peaceful just a couple years ago compared to now. Wonder what happened

That would present a completely viable way out. Russia won't go for it, however. They want a defenseless Ukraine that they control. Russia has not publicized any willingness to withdraw their invading army under any conditions.

You left out the part where the Potato sends billions to rebuild Ukraine

This is obviously what needs to happen. Give Putin an off ramp and tell Zelensky and the Ukes if you want continued assistance make a deal now....or else.
This damn war needs to end already.

Ukrainians may balk as they already gave up their nukes in exchange for territorial integrity and that was breached.
They’d essentially be at the whim of the West if Russia invaded again.
Let’s say Trump wins in 2024 and the Russians feel he won’t do what Biden has done in rallying the West. Ukraine is fricked then.

How does this work knowing that Ukraine wasn't invaded while the orange man was in the first time?

Past results are not always indicative of future behavior.
I’m not arguing whether Trump should or would or even if the Russians should or would.
But if I’m a Ukrainian, that is definitely playing into my calculus.

U think Putin would have invaded if our boy Trump was still President? Highly doubtful

It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense that Putin would think Trump would be a pushover now but didn't then. What changed?
