Glyphosate, an herbicide that remains the world's most ubiquitous weed killer, raises the cancer risk of those exposed to it by 41%, a new analysis says. Researchers from the University of Washington evaluated existing studies into the chemical -- found in weed killers including Monsanto's popular Roundup -- and concluded that it significantly increases the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), a cancer of the immune system.

Traces of glyphosate are in about everything we consume. In some areas, including the tap water. France recently banned it.

Damn near everything causes cancer if you expose yourself to too much of it.

May be anecdotal but true none the less. My aunt, uncle, and their 3 children were all exposed to insecticides and herbicides most of their lives because they were farmers, four of the five developed cancer, three have died, one has beaten cancer. The one who did not get cancer was also the oldest who married at age 16 and moved from the farm.

Well how much of it does it take to cause the heightened cancer risk? The dose matters when you're talking about some increased risk of a toxic effect. As far as I can tell from the abstract and the article reporting on the study, that information isn't there. So pump the breaks on the scary trace levels until there's some evidence those are dangerous.

Also, this appears to be a meta analysis, so they didn't do any direct testing. Just aggregated studies already done. Since it's just doing statistics on those, I'd be careful drawing any conclusions without checking their methodology. I've seen headlines about glyphosate causing cancer for years, but the thrust of a major increase in cancer risk seems to always get debunked.

So yeah, take a holding pattern on this before jumping to any definitive conclusions.

I had an opportunity to be trained as a crop duster pilot, but declined because of the pesticide/herbicide exposure; I was more concerned with this, and a long, drawn-out cancer death, than being killed in a crash.

Yes. I would love to know the exposure levels here.

Sort of like how they got saccharin to cause cancer in rats by making them consume 300 time the normal daily amount.

Wait...

So you are trying to tell me...

That something that effectively works to kill some form of life is detrimental to other forms of life?

Holy shite!!!!

Who would have ever imagined that to be possible?

As a trained office crop duster, I can assure you there is no risk involved except a lingering foul odor.

Well well well lookie what we got here.... last paragraph....

However, he noted that the report was limited by the small number of existing studies on the subject, though he stressed that the authors were "honestly self-reflective on the limitations of the analyses." "[The report] highlights the need for new, well-designed and robust studies at appropriate exposure levels," Martin said, adding, "The number of robust studies in the literature examining this question is pathetically small.

New Study says we NEED MORE STUDIES!

What a relief. I use a lot of Round Up. Now that I see CNN says it's deadly and CNN always lies I'm confident that Round Up is perfectly safe.

I wonder if those licensed applicators sprayed alot of 2,4D as well, because that actually has been scientifically linked to cancer in dogs.

Basically, pesticide applicators are *maybe* getting cancer at a higher rate, therefore it must be Mansanto! HAS TO BE! Nevermind the 100 other chemicals those guys get exposed to on a regular basis.

The authors of the University of Washington report analyzed all published studies on the impact of glyphosate on humans. Co-author and doctoral student Rachel Shaffer said in a statement: "This research provides the most up-to-date analysis of glyphosate and its link with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, incorporating a 2018 study of more than 54,000 people who work as licensed pesticide applicators."

It'd be nice if news organizations didn't rush to write stories about very limited studies that end up just calling for more studies.

Question for the board-

If Mansanto hadn't gotten on the bad side of the left (and right), years ago, by trying to patent seeds and suing farmers, do you think anyone would give a shite about Roundup right now?
