Senate Republicans are weighing a speedy impeachment trial that could include no witnesses for President Trump’s legal team or for House Democrats.

The White House has indicated publicly that it has a wish list of potential witnesses, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Hunter Biden and the whistleblower who sparked the impeachment inquiry.

But Republican senators, including Trump allies and members of leadership, appear reluctant to drag themselves through a drawn-out trial with messy procedural votes when the outcome appears pre-baked.

“I think a protracted period where there are motions to call witnesses offered by both sides and lots of votes … is not going to be terribly popular with either side. I think there’s going to be a desire to wrap this up in at least somewhat of a timely way,” Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 2 Republican senator, told reporters.

He added that while a final decision won’t be made until closer to the trial, “there’s going to be a lot of people who I think are going to say, ‘I don’t really want to drag this on.’”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) asked about the possibility of a Senate trial where neither side got witnesses, replied: “I hope so. That’s what I like.”

Pressed on the White House wanting to call individuals like Schiff, he noted that Democrats could, in turn, call Vice President Pence or Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Though both Trump’s legal team and the House impeachment managers would be able to request witnesses, they’ll need the backing of 51 senators to win the procedural motions to formally call a particular witness. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the chamber.

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), a member of GOP leadership, warned against getting into a “bidding war” over witnesses.

“When the outcome is almost certain, once both sides have presented their case, I think it would be legitimate to ask is there anymore that we need to hear that is going to change the result, and if not how much more time is reasonable to spend on this?” Blunt said.

So this will be a horse trading deal. No trial for a swift vote of no removal so no one gets exposed. This is why "deep state" will never be overthrown in our government.

Witnesses will expose not only Democrats but Republicans too.

So there's that.

McConnell and Graham are Democrats. Schumer will tell them what to do.

WHY?

Can't they do what the Dims did in the House and change the Rules so that McConnell alone determines who gets called and then accept all of Trump's witnesses and reject all the hearsay witnesses the Dims want to call?

They can just make a rule that there will be no Hearsay witnesses and every Dim "witness" goes away.

So Trump gets to call no witnesses in the house or senate? That’s going to go over real well with half the country... It’s absolutely un-American to not allow someone the ability to call witnesses and defend themselves

Sounds an awful lot like how W handled things in the last few years of his term, where he got blasted repeatedly and just bent over and took it.

Rush suspects that Durham is fixing to bring the hammer, making a vindictive show trial in the Senate unnecessary. Besides, I would be VERY concerned about the risks in drawing this out with people like Mitt Romney involved.

Mitt can be neutered on a few levels between his family’s corruption and there being enough of a buffer (52 GOP Senators and a VP tiebreaker) that it would take several turncoats for him to have a significant effect.

That’s not to put it past Collins, Murkowski, etc, but Collins’ political future is in jeopardy already because both sides are pissed at her.

+1

My Christmas list:

- I want a trial that takes 90 or more days (until the Durham report is published)
- I want every Senator who is running for office to be forced to sit there every day. Let them figure another way to campaign.
- I want the so-called Whistle-Blower to testify
- I want to know who the WB talked to
- I want Shiff to testify and everyone of his staff who worked with the WB to testify. What was said, what did you direct them to do?

I want to treat the Democrats better than the Republicans were treated but to call into question the constitutionality of this Impeachment. Their Charges (This time around, because they WILL impeach at least once more to stain the President's Record) don't meet the statute of High Crimes or Misdemeanors. Just because there will be no judicial Review to their action doesn't make this less egregious. Democrats have objectively violated their Oath of Office and need to be called out on it. Each supporter of this action needs to be held in account (Roll Call) and a demand for their Expulsion be made. Of course, this won't happen since it takes 2/3's of a body to pass. The president alone should make this demand and settle for the heads of Shiff and Nadler.

What actual witnesses are there? Most of them Dem witnesses don't have any direct knowledge. If this is all based on a phone call, the only real witnesses are Trump and Zelensky.

Do you really think a drawn out Senate trial is going to draw out anything bad that the permaGov does at this juncture? If you are looking for your multiple pounds of flesh, this is a bad way to get it. Having too much chaos and a circus is too risky for all involved. Presidents come and go every 4-8 years. Senators stick around at a minimum 18 years on average.

Trumps re election with Republicans holding the Senate will scare the living fu cking shi t out of the Democrats because then Trump has a free hand with them and can go about and deliver he'll from multiple fronts.

This is a signal to President Trump. It is Graham and McConnell saying they will vote to keep him in office if they can just sweep the whole inquisition under the rug before something really nasty comes out.
