Republican led states make big push to mandate government ID checks to view porn online

Last month, Louisiana became the first state to require an ID from residents to access pornography online. Since then, seven states have rushed to follow in Louisiana’s footsteps. According to a tracker from Free Speech Coalition, Florida, Kansas, South Dakota, and West Virginia introduced similar laws, and laws in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Virginia are seemingly closest to passing. If passed, some of these laws could be enforced promptly, while some bills in states like Florida and Mississippi specify that they wouldn’t take effect until July.
quote:
These laws work by requiring age verification of all users, imposing damages on commercial entities found to be neglecting required age verification and distributing content to minors online that has been deemed to be inappropriate. The laws target online destinations where more than a third of the content is considered harmful to minors.
quote:
Arkansas' bill proposes requiring porn sites to prevent underage access via any “commercially reasonable age verification method,” including collecting age data from a digitized identification card connected to a state-approved application. That method enables porn sites to access data listed on a state license or identification card.

These bills on the surface sound like a good idea, but I get the feeling they’re more like a Trojan horse and the democrats will abuse them in some way to restrict access to all sorts of material.

There's lot of studies that show having easily accessible porn is terrible for Children & Teens. Making it ever so slightly harder for them to view it is an overall net positive.

That's the parent's job, not government.
If you think you need laws to make it easier to manage your chidren's activities, you shouldn't have had children.

did i say there werent? i just said its an attack on freedom
if i made the same statement about guns hurting people and if i said...making it ever so slightly harder for them to get them is an overall net positive
you would rightfully lose you mind right? there is no difference.

It doesn’t make it harder though. There’s porn on Twitter/Reddit, etc And many porn sites are not American and thus are not governed by these restrictions.
The only thing this does is lay down the framework for government overreach, privacy invasion (they totally won’t keep records though I’m sure) and access restriction in the future.

Republicans loving freedom and small government is the biggest lie ever told....they love to be free to do whatever that choose and free to tell you what to do and they love no regulation in their affairs while loving to regulate yours. Talk to a libertarian long enough, if you can stomach it, and you will eventually hear them describe, in detail, every vestige of modern society and government in every detail...only it will have been them who thought it up because no one else is smart enough.

Parent's job... not the states or any government entity.
Besides, you can still access everything without verification if you are not on Wifi....

Has this gone into effect yet? Because I haven't run into issues.
Uh, I mean my friend hasn't run into any issues. Yeah, that's it.

thank you
its not the governments job to protect you from these kinds of things
protection from foreign invasion= governemnts job
protection of private property rights= governments job
protecting children from viewing anything they shouldnt = parents job
dont complain about the nanny state and then come back on here supporting this
very simple for parents to install filters. last fricking thing we need to do is to be giving the government any more power over anything at all. in fact quite the opposite.

So we should get rid of age restrictions on booze, driving, and sexual activity then?

Well, republican voters generally favor personal accountability and fewer restrictions on personal freedom. Republican politicians...not so much.

Not really. There just aren't enough Rand Paul types to make a difference. Too few in number.
