The only people we know who shop at REI are Mercedes liberals and other feel-good regressives who can afford to pay the ridiculous prices this chain charges. Never shopped there, never will.

As I was saying what I thought in a polite manner, Jessica wanted to interrupt me. Several times.
Finally she demanded my membership number and would cancel it.

You confuse legal with "how the world should be working". This isn't good for consumers, and consumers have every right to push back...and are right to push back.
What? I haven't confused anything. This isn't a 2A issue. And you don't know if this is good or bad for consumers, nobody can know that until the aggregate of consumers act on this new info.
Regardless of the outcome, if there is a demand for these products, then they will be sold/distributed. This isn't complicated.

Her boss just delivered a giant ball of shite, and she's at the bottom of the hill. Her day is screwed!

REI exited the chat on me before I could finish making my point.

Yes. I know we want all our customer services reps to be cheery... but I'm sure she's having a really bad day, getting yelled at by people she doesn't know for a decision she didn't make.

Oh well, she can find another job with another company. Those kinds of jobs are a dime a dozen.

Well, we just got a sierra trading Post in the area, cheaper and a lot closer to my house. No-brainer.

Why should she? Her phones/chat will be back to normal in 2 days when the outrage dies out. And her boss doesn't give 2 shits about customer service complaints from customers cancelling memberships. After all...they aren't customers anymore.

Never been nor heard of REI.
Same here. Kind of pissed I didn’t have any business with them that I could move to somebody else.

Her goal was to keep me from stating why! That way they could say "we don't know why" people are canceling memberships.
SO I told her that Before I gave her my number, I was going to explain why. "Surely you want to know why a member is canceling their membership"
Her response "I don't need to know why."
My response, "But I need to let you know why and I am!"
Followed up with a phone call!

Then they should allow me to talk to the man making the decisions. But they don't.

REI’s poor customer service reps are going to have their hands full with all the triggered snowflakes today

You are arguing with yourself. Nobody said it was a 2A issue.
Common sense dictates that suppliers pulling supply from the shelf is bad for consumers at least in the short run.
Obviously, the market can/will adjust. We're seeing the demand side adjust now, and hopefully, someone will fill the supply side. But, again, consumers have the right and are right to push back.

They know. They may not want to admit it, but they know.

This morning we learned that Vista does not plan to make a public statement that outlines a clear plan of action. As a result, we have decided to place a hold on future orders of products that Vista sells through REI while we assess how Vista proceeds.
REI is determined to preach politics to a large segment of it's consumer base until they either wise up and leave, or wise up and leave.
In 10 years, REI is going to be the Subaru of outdoor equipment.
