An urgent plea by Tybee Island’s mayor to reconsider a state order reopening the beaches. A message from a Republican legislator siding with local officials over Gov. Brian Kemp. And an irate city official said Kemp could “come lock me up” for opposing the decision.

Tybee Island officials were among the most outspoken critics of Kemp’s decision to lift local restrictions that shuttered the town’s seashore. And records show a vigorous behind-the-scenes campaign urging him to change his mind.

Mayor Shirley Sessions warned the governor in an April 3 email shortly before his statewide mandate took effect that reopening the beaches would deal a “devastating blow” to safety efforts from the town of roughly 3,000 people.

“With Jekyll Island, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida beaches closed, the influx of residents and visitors on our 2.5 mile beach will create a severe health crisis, and chaos in trying to maintain social distancing,” she wrote Kemp.

Politicians need to do what's best for the people, not what's easiest for them PR wise in the press.

Kemp should be praised for having the courage to stand up for what's right even when he knew the media would savage him for it.

These people still think they can avoid ever coming into contact with this virus.

Everyone will be exposed at some point if you haven’t already. There is no use ruining your lives over it.

I’m thankful that we don’t have Governor Abrams.

The Stacey Abrams supporters bashed him endlessly. Any Opportunity to turn our state into the hell holes of other Democrat led states, they take it.

If it were not for "her turn" Hillary supporters, I would say I never have seen such big babies. Of course all the Abrahms supporters were also Hillary supporters.

I bet she begs the state for help when her local government comes up short due to lack of sales tax revenue.

I mean, they could've shut down the US 80 bridge except to residents.

I don't think this is about the virus. I bet the people who actually live on Tybee (not the Atlanta metro that own beach houses) see what Tybee is like in warm weather with no retards invading and they love it.
