Washington Post

quote:

nearly 400 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced sexual misconduct allegations in the past two decades. As many as 700 victims — some as young as 3 — were sexually abused, some raped and molested repeatedly, according to the report.

Obviously, Catholic priests taking a vow of celibacy isn't the only reason children get raped.

This surely isn't limited to Christians either. Organized religion is executing itself.

religion has nothing to do with it, other than being a grouping of people

people do bad things and if you get big enough populations, you see some legit outlier/evil behavior somewhat regularly

Religion absolutely has a lot to do with this, mostly due to the cover-up.

Safe haven for predators.

"cover up"

quote:

The Southern Baptist Convention, a fellowship of more than 47,000 Baptist churches and 15 million members across the United States and its territories, is the country’s second-largest faith group after the Catholic Church.

quote:

While the majority of abusers have been convicted of sex crimes and are registered sex offenders, the investigation found that at least three dozen pastors, employees and volunteers who showed predatory behavior still worked at churches.

there is no cover up

36 people out of 15M isn't even statistically 0

*ETA: with 36 people over 47k churches, that means one in 1300 churches has a potential abuser.

We shame victims of sexual abuse in politics all the time too. I'll leave it at that.

The difference is, when Protestant pastors do this stuff, they are arrested and not protected by the church.

Not trying excuse this disgusting act, one abused child is too many, but there are 100 million Baptists worldwide and 700 cases of abused children. That's 7 millionths of 1 percent. I wonder what the statistics are for non-Baptist abuse cases?
I'm also wondering what your motive is for creating this topic.

the reason why the Catholic scandal became such a big deal was because there is a legit hierarchy in the Catholic church

that same structure simply doesn't exist with Southern Baptists. yeah they have a convention and a loose set of rules, but there is no real hierarchy. there is no way for a mass cover up to even occur. you'd need 47,000 heads of churches to all agree to participate in the cover-up, and that's simply impossible

in a grouping of 15M people, you're going to find a ton of evil people. you're relying on a Texas Sharpshooter's Fallacy here

While I'll agree to a degree, I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that.

Yes, that's it. It has nothing to do with evidence.

Using your logic, I could use your statement and say that you stand to protect child molesters.

Christianity can be a terrific foundation and it has been for most Americans, but we can't look past this stuff.

That and with the meticulous records the Catholic Church keeps it's makes them easier to track.

Where as other churches who hire the pastor and keep to themselves can fire the pastor if some frickery pops up and there is hardly a record kept of their time there. They just move onto another church.
