NY prosecutors try to get Trump's CFO to flip by 'investigating whether they BOTH evaded tax by paying his grandkids' private school fees'

--Sources said Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr.'s office subpoenaed Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School over more than $500,000 in tuition fees

--The fees were allegedly paid by Trump and Allen Weisselberg for Weisselberg's grandchildren who attended the $50,000 a term school in the Upper West Side

--Prosecutors are thought to be looking into the tuition fee payments, made between 2012 and 2019, to determine if tax laws were broken

--Weisselberg is the Trump Organization's Chief Financial Officer and one of Trump's closest confidantes

--He also deals with the Trump family's personal finances

--The DA's office has reportedly spent months trying to 'flip' Weisselberg

--He has not been accused of or charged with any crime

--Jennifer Weisselberg, who was married to Allen's son Barry from 2004 to 2018 and is mom of the two children at the school, has already turned witness

I could see the CFO getting popped for not declaring a benefit like this but the Tim Geithner precedent makes it hard to take it seriously.

Trump OTOH? If he isn’t deducting the cost of paying for the tuition, how is that tax evasion?

I have a secret to tell them.

John McCain did this. They can investigate Cindy McCain’s taxes next.

every wealthy person does this. they are trying to compose a crime on what they all do in DC filing taxes.

let's raid Pelosi's husband and go through his taxes.

isn't this the IRS's job?

i saw an article that the IRS was getting billions to better target audits of the wealthy.

so Biden is paying the IRS now to compose on Trump. this is beyond sick.

Biden Seeks $80 Billion to Beef Up I.R.S. Audits of High Earners

80 billion dollars to essentially get Trump.

80 billion dollars is the price to compose on who Biden's DOJ says to.

The IRS should not be beholden to anyone yet they are as the SEIU.

They should have investigated who paid for the Clintons house in New York.

That is totally ridiculous.

Witness to what? That her kids went to a good school and Trump helped pay for it? Big deal.

Maybe they could get Trump on a failure to pay the payroll tax charge and the attorney for not reporting the tuition payments as income. Big fricking deal! Pay the tax and penalties and move on.

Maybe they should dunk him underwater. If he drowns, he's innocent. If he lives he's a witch and has to be killed. Just like they did in Salem.

I would assume by not reporting it or not reporting it as a gift. Financial gifts over a certain amount (10k I believe) are subject to tax. I guess they are going with the “you didn’t report a taxable gift now we are going to ruin your life” thing. It’s ridiculous

The DS and Democrats will/are working on utilizing "the Trump taxes" as a means to stop the voter fraud investigations. No matter what is or isn't found nothing will stop the 2020 presidential election voter fraud investigation. This isn't merely in Trumps hands so their effort(s) to stop it will fail.

I thought paying someone else's tuition was a non-taxable gift.

edit to add: neither the giver nor the recipient owe tax in this scenario.

This is banana republic stuff, but no surprise there. So was the prosecution of Ramesh Ponnuru. So was the weaponizing of the IRS to go after Republican donors. So was the first DJT impeachment scheme.

For example, if you give your brother $50,000 this year, you’ll use up your $15,000 annual exclusion. The bad news is that you’ll need to file a gift tax return, but the good news is that you probably won’t pay a gift tax. Why? Because the extra $35,000 ($50,000 - $15,000) simply counts against your $11.58 million lifetime exclusion. Next year, if you give your brother another $50,000, the same thing happens: you use up your $15,000 annual exclusion and whittle away another $35,000 of your lifetime exclusion.

Am I missing something here?? Does anyone believe that Trump sits down and plows thru those tax forms every 4/15??

Doesn't he just tell his preparers where to find all his data - and tells them to use every loophole the congress has imbedded in the tax code?? Are not the CPA's responsible for the compliance with the code?? I know the filer is 'responsible' for every item listed, but unless it is proven that he personally overrode what the CPAs presented to him, would he not be subject to nothing more than monetary penalties??

Wouldn't he have to be involved in actually altering the professionally prepared returns to have any legal liability in 'fraud?' Unless he hired corrupt CPAs with instructions to 'cheat if you have to" wouldn't any legal (criminal) penalties go to the preparers??

My taxes are so simple I don't have to worry about any of this - so I am unsophisticated in all the perils.
