Challenge one of "these people" to name the country that doesn't have slavery in its history. They must mean 'recent history', where they define 'recent'.

I get that it was unfair to the slaves, and how their offspring... well, some of them make everyone around them (including, and especially, the good people that share roughly the same lineage) f*cking MISERABLE, I just don't think that indentured servitude would've matched the raw, low-cost manpower of slavery. Even slavery was becoming economically unsustainable until Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. The tobacco, cotton, and others were economic fuel for our early nation, and if slavery was barely sustainable, I don't think you could've swapped it with indentured servitude and survived. Or maybe someone would have figured something else out, who knows? That's why I said "probably."
