Principled Conservative Justin Amash votes to hold Barr/Ross in contempt
quote:

@mkraju

24-15, House Oversight votes to hold Bill Barr and Wilbur Ross in contempt over defying a Democratic subpoena for info on citizenship question of 2020 census, setting the stage for a court fight with the Trump administration. Justin Amash voted for the motion

He's so brave! A monument to conservatism in the mold of Jeff Flake.

And then suddenly Trump and Barr obstructed and Amash is going to be a cockblocking annoyance at every turn. Let Trump back off the Chinese tariffs and I bet Amash has a realization that Barr has acted in good faith all along.

Amash doesn't vote lock-step with party.

Some people think that's a good thing, other think it's about the worst thing one can do.

I've supported Amash since day 1, but he's lost me. If you want to attack Trump for his behavior fine, but save some of your scorn for the frightening behavior of the intelligence community and your colleagues who've parroted a lie for 3 years. And then to find out his business interests in China conflict with Trump's tariffs makes it all too apparent.

Set aside for a moment your feelings about whether the subpoenas should ever have been issued. They WERE issued, and in a manner consistent with the rules of the body which did so.

That being the case, could you please explain what is “Unconservative“ about expecting compliance with a validly-issued subpoena?

Is it “conservative” to enable a witness in ignoring such a subpoena?

democrats have weaponized congress. They are using bull shite investigations to harass and intimidate their political opponents. These police state tactics are used in banana republics.

Curious Hank, where was your outrage when the House asked for documents from previous admin and they refused to provide them? I can't find the posts.

Has there been a more swift and public unveiling of crass self-interest disguised as altruism in recent memory?

re: Principled Conservative Justin Amash votes to hold Barr/Ross in contempt
"Validly issued" isn't the gist of the analysis. Rather, assertion of Executive Privilege. It is well established that the doctrine of executive privilege protects a number of Executive Branch confidentiality interests. Preserving the confidentiality of internal White House deliberations related to official actions by the President lies at the core of the privilege. See, e.g., In re Sealed Case, 121 F.3d 729, 752-53 (D.C. Cir. 1997) (addressing presidential communications component of executive privilege); Assertion of Executive Privilege With Respect to Clemency Decision, 23 Op. O.L.C. 1, 1-2 (1999) (opinion of Attorney General Janet Reno) (same). As the Supreme Court recognized in United States v. Nixon, 418 U.S. 683 (1974), there is a necessity for protection of the public interest in candid, objective, and even blunt or harsh opinions in Presidential decision making. A President and those who assist him must be free to explore alternatives in the process of shaping policies and making decisions and to do so in a way many would be unwilling to express except privately. These ... considerations justify[] a presumptive privilege for Presidential communications. The privilege is fundamental to the operation of Government and inextricably rooted in the separation of powers under the Constitution. (Source: DOJ OLC)

first, I hardly have any “outrage“ about anything. This thread is full of accusations that this action was not “conservative,“ and I am curious as to the basis for those accusations.

Second, you’ll likely not find any such posts from me during the Obama administration, because I was not active on the politics board during that administration. My participation on this site for the first few years was limited to the Aggie sports board.

Similar separation of powers protections from the Executive apply to Congress under the Speech & Debate Clause.
