Think about this: If you ask the top 1% to pay the same tax rate they paid in 2001, when George W. Bush was President, that would generate $13 billion a year. That’s enough to provide two years of community college free to every student in America.

We need a fairer tax system.

Dog whistle to people who pay either almost none, or no taxes to be jealous of those that already DO pay a ton in taxes.

Crazy how badly Dems misunderstand that trickle-down works both ways

They pushed a wildly unpopular partial government takeover of healthcare and then lost Congress.

It would be much easier to cut spending significantly to bring things back down to where we were in 2001.

How about we get started on that first?

The theory isn't trickle down - it is a rising tide lifts all boats.

And it does.

I agree, we need a fairer system.

Everyone pays the same low tax rate. No penalizing people because they make more money.

That’s like me picking up a penny off the ground in comparison to the bloated up federal budget .

I'd have this conversation if I felt like it was actually the intent. The fact of the matter is that both the Republicans, and to a much greater extent the Democrats, use the tax code to punish certain constituencies or pander to other constituencies.

My proposal is to eliminate the IRS and implement a VAT tax. Get rid of everything else: income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, death taxes, tariffs, etc, etc, etc. fricking EVERYONE pays the same rate whenever they consume anything. Don't want to pay taxes? Don't buy stuff.

Why the heck would we waste that additional 13 billion on 2 years of community college where 25% will flunk out, 25% still won’t be able to co tribute to society, and the other 50% are indoctrinated?

Learn a damn skill. Learn a skill and then you can actually pay off a student loan.

Let’s stop treating college as a place to “find yourself” and “explore the classics” and let’s make it what it should be; a place to learn a skill that can be used to feed your family, but a house, have a retirement, and enjoy life.

Any joe blow can go and take out a loan. Is it expensive? Yes but that’s a different argument.

Has yet to send me my refund check on returns I mailed in on April 5th. My CPA told me last week he keeps getting notices saying the IRS doesn't know when refunds will be processed. All the free money the government is doling out takes office precedence to refund processing. Bottom line, the government is earning interest on my money instead of me.

I’d rather have the top 1% keep that money then to give it to future drop outs.

Take the funding away from the proposed California and Florida’s capitol police offices instead.

also enough to line some fat cat's bank account. I'll bet 10,000 dollars more money goes to some influencers acct than to education.

The tax paid in 2001 would have been due to Clinton's tax codes, not Bush's

Is this where we pretend that changes in tax rates will not change any other parameters? Those costs won’t be ultimately passed along and won’t ultimately depress economic activity resulting in lower tax revenues despite the higher tax rate?
