The vast majority of Americans say it is more important for the United States to have a strong manufacturing base than to have an exorbitant amount of cheap, foreign products.

In a new poll by Rasmussen Reports, nearly 70 percent of likely voters said it is more important to keep manufacturing jobs in the United States than keeping prices on products low for consumers.

A minority of only 20 percent of likely voters said it was more important to keep product prices low than to have a booming U.S. manufacturing base.

Honest question, what stopped people from buying American before? I've long tried to buy American, and have mostly American made dress shoes and American made musical instruments. Somethings, like clothing outside of shoes, is harder to find.

Why not both?

Jobs are not an end in themselves

They are a means to produce goods and services

If jobs were what mattered, let’s outlaw every technology

It depends entirely on the difference in price verses the amount of jobs created and how much those jobs pay. If the increase in employment and purchasing power from those jobs outweights the overall loss in purchasing power from the increased prices, then it’s worth it. Otherwise, it is not.

People make economic decisions for a variety of reasons and biggest driver is usually costs followed by quality.

I'm not necessary advocating for tariffs by posting the OP. I'm just pointing out the political mood of the country on this one issue, right or wrong.

The large proportion of our country that has little to no economic knowledge never ceases to amaze me.

And it all starts with a broken highschool education system. Apparently knowing the details of King Henry the 8th is more important than basic economic principles or how to balance a checkbook.

Well part of why I like buying American is that the few American manufacturers left in terms of music have higher build qualities. It was an easy way of discerning the quality of an instrument, in general. There is even a large secondary market for American made instruments from the 70's and 80's, so I'm hopeful that if those sorts of jobs return, the quality won't be diluted under the "Made in America" label, which I'm sure someone will try to take advantage of while cutting costs in other places.

If the majority of Americans say that, it's probably safe to say the opposite is better.

True, but jobs are better than social services. So we either pay on the front end or pay on the back end.

Paying on the front end with a little dignity added to society is arguably better than paying on the back end with the addition of worthlessness into society.

Or, they seek and find where they can make themselves most valuable instead of depending on the government to either protect them or feed them.

Well the only place where I'm associated with buying American is buying steel. And the main reason is because we can send inspectors to the mills domestically to ensure quality.

That is usually the case with people with above 90 IQ. But there is A LOT of Americans with IQs lower than 90. They need those "menial" jobs.

I'm always willing to pay a little more if it's made in America and is a QUALITY product vs. cheap Asian shite but not pay more for cheap American shite vs. cheap Asian shite.

Make it in America, and make it well. People will pay for quality.

So people are too dumb to know both?

That’s an interesting opinion.

It seems most people here do not understand what is going on with these tariffs.

Think exemptions... not tariffs.

If people want to pay more then let them pay more. The market will decide via the dollars that are spent.

Everyone can posture when it comes to selecting a poll option.

When it comes to choosing a product at Walmart, they won't be so charitable. I know this because they've already chosen. And they chose the cheaper products.

The one good thing about Trump is that he's creating a fault line between the pro-business libertards and the working-class voters who voted for him.

His coalition can't last. At least Bush and Reagan pretty much admitted they didn't care about manufacturing jobs.
