One way to think of President Trump's trade policy as a sort of soap opera. There are multiple plotlines, there's high drama, and plot twists abound. And on top of all that, you can walk away for a while, come back, and still know the general thrust of the plot — in this case, the thrust being that President Trump has a penchant for blowing up trade agreements (or at least, saying that he will). Today, we catch you up on the latest dramatic developments and answer a big, looming question: are we in a trade war?

Maybe this is just because of my upbringing in a heavily union and heavily industrial state (PA).....but it’s interesting to me how many democrats on this board are so against any sort of protectionism

My dad, a huge free trader and conservative republican, used to always tell me the “lunch sack union dudes” and democrats were for tariffs and higher prices

I guess because of the lack of industry in the south, the democrats of the region just aren’t as into the protectionism

I don't think I've seen many democrats posting about this, unless you're considering classical liberals Ds even though they are primarily in the GOP nowadays.

I think you're just highlighting why two primarily political parties is problematic since there are many unique ideologies within each with views that often span across both.

I'd be massively opposed to TrumpTrade if I thought it was about protectionism. In fact though, TrumpTrade policy is about breaking protectionism.
