and these are the people with all of the symptoms.

This is going to end up being the biggest overhyped panic in the history of the United States.

Hopefully in a few weeks when we learn this the markets (jobs, stock, everything) will take off again.

Can't wait till June when all this is forgotten so we can make fun of everyone who overhyped it.

I'm no expert but I think it could be a good thing for the economy in the long run. Demand for goods and services hasn't gone anywhere, so when people get the all clear they're gonna flock to restaurants and concerts etc. because they'll have their freedom back.

I agree, but there is something circulating in the MSU community that 30 percent of businesses in Starkville could close - no sporting events + no students for rest of spring. 40% of Augusta's business happens during Masters week.

And restaurants are reporting 60 percent less YoY numbers nationwide.

This is the real pandemic.

Surgeon General said it in the press conference today. Also said the number was 96% in South Korea.

What's funny is that if this is true, then, there is no possible way that the supposed contagion rate reported at first is true.

Hopefully, it brings a drive to US companies in foreign countries to bring manufacturing back to the US.

If both numbers are true, then the original estimates weren't just inaccurate.

They were WILDLY inaccurate.

Restaurants were pretty well packed today. See what the bars are doing tonight but I imagine it will be busy, people like to drink during the "bad" times.

It was only true initially because the number of tests was really low.

As the number of tests increases, the mortality rate will decrease.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE
by Kevin Ryan

President Trump held a press conference with members of his coronavirus task force this afternoon. Among the news that came from the conference:

PRESIDENT TESTED FOR CORONAVIRUS: President Trump has been tested for the coronavirus. The results will be released when they are available. The Vice President has not yet been tested. Also, all members of the cabinet and press corps had their temperature checked via thermal forehead thermometer before the conference. One member of the press was found to have a high temperature and was not allowed to attend the conference.

PAY FOR SICK LEAVE: The IRS will issue tax credits and tax reductions to companies to pay for sick leave for any of their employees affected by coronavirus-related employment interruptions. The funding was set up in a way to ensure workers will not have to go to a new “big government program” and wait 6 months to get paid, but instead will simply continue to be paid by their employer.

“If you are sick, stay home. You will be paid.”

FREE CORONAVIRUS TESTING: The bipartisan legislation passing through Congress includes free coronavirus testing for everyone, no matter their insurance status.

TRAVEL BANS: The travel ban on people from Europe will be extended to the UK and Ireland, which had been exempted, effective midnight Monday night. The bans DO NOT apply to Americans returning home. American citizens and green card holders, are still allowed to return home to the US - but will be funneled to 13 airports and be subjected to health screenings. Travel restrictions do not apply to cargo and trade shipping.

CRUISE LINES: 80% of cruise lines have stopped sailing voluntarily for 30 days, and are working on new health policies for the future.

SENIORS: The various health officials present at the meeting stressed the importance of asking Americans to support vulnerable seniors with underlying health problems who are at elevated risk due to the coronavirus. Be sure to practice safe hygiene, especially around the elderly. The government has stepped up inspections of nursing home facilities.

WORLDWIDE NUMBERS: There are currently 132,000+ cases of COVID-19 in 129 countries around the world, including 7,500 new cases. As the WHO announced yesterday, Europe is now the epicenter of the outbreak, while China has seen just 11 new cases. Also, South Korea has peaked.

U.S. NUMBERS: There are about 1,800 cases in the U.S., and 50 deaths. The U.S. has not yet peaked.

TESTING: 98-99% of tests in the U.S. on people exhibiting flu-like symptoms have come back negative for the coronavirus. By comparison, in South Korea (where the outbreak started much earlier), 96% of the 250,000 tests on people with flu-like symptoms have come back negative for the coronavirus. However, people should stay vigilant, maintain strict levels of hygiene, and NOT return to riskier activities if they test negative for the virus.

FURTHER INFORMATION: Surgeon General Jerome Adams says we need to come together and focus on health, stay bipartisan in our efforts, and not politicize the outbreak. He said that 98-99% of people who come down with the illness will recover.

There will be an update at 5pm et Sunday on the implementation of plans for new testing infrastructure.

Facts and information on the coronavirus can be found at www.coronavirus.gov.

I’m confused, I thought like a million people had this but we just hadn’t tested them yet. Something isn’t adding up.

It is if you're using Chinese models where people live on top of each other in generational buildings.

This is the problem in Italy as well. 2 or 3 generations living in apartment buildings right on top of each other.

Perhaps.

But, I've been sitting here noticing LOTS of shite that violates the "If x is true, then Y must be true also" equation.

Assholes were reporting high contagion rates AND high mortality rates VERY loosely and yet HIGHLY concentrated populations really weren't experiencing large numbers.

Oh sure. To the average nitwit, the numbers seemed large. But, they weren't large compared to populations in question.

Said it in another thread and I'll say it here too.

West Virginia has zero cases. West Virginia also has the highest number of regular flu cases.

I'm willing to wager that West Virginians also lead the nation in number of people who did not take the flu vaccine this season.

There's a link.

#2 on the list of regular flu cases is Oklahoma with Arkansas at #3.

Now I'm not sure about Oklahoma, but here in Arkansas we still don't have any confirmed cases of corona. Only a few presumptive cases.

What's the link? Not sure. But taking the flu vaccine may make it so your body isn't as ready to fight these coronaviruses off naturally. The virus isn't taking hold in the areas where people don't get the flu vaccine.
